An astrological portrait of Pope Francis I
The complete chart interpretation covers four main sections: Personality, Relationship Needs, Relationship Wants and the Marriage Blueprint, and Career. This is a "classic" example of an astrological portrait, first published in December 2013.
Each section of the interpretation begins with the completed “Blueprint Sentence” used as the basis for that portion of the interpretation. These fill-in-the-blank blueprint template sentences are one of the exclusive tools available as part of the curriculum of the Online Natal Astrology Class. The value of these templates is that they ensure the correct relationship between the different parts of speech in the language of astrology. Simply by dropping in the appropriate keywords for signs, elements, modalities and houses, you create an astrologically-sound blueprint that you can use to build a more detailed interpretation of that specific astrological signature.
Birth Data: December 17, 1936, 9:00 p.m. ADT, Buenos Aires, Argentina • Rodden Rating: AA, BC/BR in Hand
Part 1: Personality
Elements and Modalities
Pope Francis has three planets in Air (Moon, Venus, and Mars), two planets in Earth (Mercury and Jupiter), and one planet each in Fire (Sun) and Water (Saturn). This would seem to suggest that his temperament is primarily objective (Air) and practical (Earth). Fire and Water are the elements associated with strong emotions, and having only one planet in these elements suggests that Pope Francis is most strongly motivated by reason, logic, and practical considerations.
He has an even balance in terms of modalities, with three planets in Cardinal, two in Fixed, and two in Mutable, so there’s not much information here.
Sun in Sagittarius in the 6th House
Sun Rules 2nd House
Pope Francis seeks to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun) by being passionate, independent, honorable and dynamic (Sagittarius) WITH his money, resources, and talents (Sun rules 2nd House). He encounters these needs particularly IN his job and workplace relationships (Sun in 6th House). [Blueprint Sentence]
Pope Francis’ Sun in Sagittarius is the only planet in Fire in his chart, and even here, the passion and drive of Sagittarius is primarily directed to more tangible, practical matters such as his money and resources (Sun rules 2nd House) and his job (Sun in 6th House). He encounters his authentic “Big S” Self in his 6th house pursuits, and while the 6th house generally means one’s “job,” it’s also a house that’s related to service and servitude, a meaning that seems rather appropriate given his life path. The Sun in Sagittarius needs freedom, and the ability to pursue its own path to a higher Truth, and Pope Francis particularly needs this in his financial matters. One possible interpretation could be that he values truth and freedom, and may, in fact, not be motivated by money and resources alone. He certainly would never take a job (6th house) just for the money (2nd house); his main priority would be the freedom to find the higher truth (Sagittarius) of his authentic Self (Sun).
Board of Directors for Sun
Jupiter in Capricorn in the 6th House [8 Votes]
Jupiter Rules 6th, 9th, Almuten 1st
In order to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), he needs to grow, expand, and experience faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is organized, Spartan, practical, and restrained (Capricorn), WITH his job (Rules 6th), his beliefs, philosophies, and higher education (Rules 9th), and his personality and self-image (Almuten 1st). He encounters these needs particularly IN his job and workplace relationships (Jupiter in 6th). [Blueprint Sentence]
It’s hardly surprising that Jupiter, the planet of faith, has such influence over Pope Francis’ Sun — and it’s equally appropriate that Jupiter rules the 6th house of service, the 9th house of religion, belief, and philosophy, and is the almuten of his 1st house, his personality and sense of self. What’s notable is that Pope Francis’ Jupiter is in Capricorn, which puts a very specific spin on how (and in what) he has faith.
Not only is Capricorn a Cardinal Earth sign, which means that planets in Capricorn become inherently practical, grounded, and motivated to take action in the physical world, but Jupiter in Capricorn is in Fall, which also suggests that Jupiter is operating on the physical and material plane at least as much as it operates on the higher spiritual planes. At lower levels of consciousness, Jupiter in Capricorn can represent significant issues with material lack and an unhealthy attachment to money and property. As Pope Francis has demonstrated, however, at higher levels of consciousness, this energy can manifest as an eschewing of material excess, and a commitment to supporting the poor and to addressing the economic forces that have created such poverty and inequality around the world.
Mars in Libra in the 3rd House [2 Votes]
Mars Rules 4th, 5th, Almuten 7th
In order to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), he needs to take action and expend energy in a manner that is agreeable, dispassionate, strategic, and sophisticated (Libra), WITH his home and family (Mars Rules 4th), his personal creativity and tolerance for risk (Mars Rules 5th), and his one-to-one relationships (Mars Almuten 7th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, personal spirituality, and familiar environment (Mars in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]
The only other planet with any influence over Pope Francis’ Sun is Mars in Libra, with 2 votes (Saturn in Pisces only has one vote for Face, and is ruled by Jupiter, so it’s influence over the Sun is negligible at best). Mars doesn’t have enough influence to push its agenda here, but Libra, like Capricorn, is a Cardinal Sign, and Mars in Libra will always support Jupiter in Capricorn’s desire to take action.
Where Mars in Libra really shows up is on the Board of Directors for Pope Francis’ Mercury in Capricorn. We can see the diplomatic skills of Mars in Libra expressing through Pope Francis’ communication, and especially through his history of negotiation and building bridges between groups of different faiths, values, and beliefs.
Aspects to the Sun
Pluto in the 1st House Quincunx Sun in the 6th House (Rules 2nd House) [2a22]
There is a random, unexpected disruption (Quincunx) caused by issues of power, control and manipulation (Pluto) COMING FROM his personality and self-image (Pluto in 1st House) and affecting his job, workplace environment, and relationships with coworkers (Sun in 6th House). This could interfere with his ability to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun), particularly WITH his money and resources (Sun rules 2nd house). [Blueprint Sentence]
With Pluto in his 1st house quincunx his Sun in the 6th house, Pope Francis will tend to shake things up and be an agent of disruption and transformation, particularly in his job and workplace environments — although because this is a quincunx, there will rarely be any obvious connection between Pope Francis and the shifts in power. It appears to be a mere coincidence that he’s always around during times of profound change and upheaval, but it’s difficult to point to him as the catalyst. On a personal level, this aspect, even more than his Jupiter in Capricorn, may be the root of his noted austerity, because the Pluto disruptions specifically affect his money and resources. One way of dealing with this could be to adopt the belief that “the less you have, the less you have to lose.”
Chiron in the 12th House Opposite Sun in the 6th House (Rules 2nd House) [5s39]
There is a need for balance and compromise (Opposition) caused by his core wound (Chiron) COMING FROM his unconscious and shadow self (Chiron in 12th) and affecting his job, workplace environment, and relationships with coworkers (Sun in 6th House). This could interfere with his ability to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun), particularly WITH his money and resources (Sun rules 2nd house). [Blueprint Sentence]
The Chiron wound, coming from his unconscious (and his tendency to self-sabotage) in the 12th house, also impacts Pope Francis’ Sun, his workplace, and especially his relationship with money. This certainly contributes to his personal austerity, although it also suggests that behavior such as his refusal to live in the papal palace, and choice to live in the modest gatehouse instead, could carry the potential of self-sabotage.
Ascendant in Cancer
When he interacts with the world and other individuals, he appears to be affectionate, deep, understanding and traditional (Cancer). Although Cancer is a Cardinal Water sign, and operates on the emotional plane, Pope Francis avoids many of the traps of personal involvement and emotional investment that we might expect from a Cancer Ascendant, because the Board of Directors for his Ascendant is filled with planets that are extremely objective.
Ascendant’s Board of Directors
Moon in Aquarius in the 8th House [5 Votes]
Moon Rules 1st, Almuten 10th, 11th
Other people perceive (Ascendant) his need to express feelings and emotions (Moon) in a manner that is abstract, rebellious, humanitarian, and eccentric (Aquarius), WITH his personality and self-image (Moon rules 1st), his career and public image (Moon Almuten 10th), and his personal ambitions (Moon Almuten 11th). [Blueprint Sentence]
We’ll explore the Moon in detail in the next section. For now, it’s enough to note that the Moon in Aquarius is notable for its gift for abstract, impersonal compassion. It’s happiest caring about big issues that affect large groups of individuals, but it’s generally uncomfortable when faced with the concerns of a single individual.
Jupiter in Capricorn in the 6th House [6 Votes]
Jupiter Rules 6th, 9th, Almuten 1st
Other people perceive (Ascendant) his need to grow, expand, and experience faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is ambitious, mature, and relentless (Capricorn), WITH his job (Jupiter Rules 6th), his beliefs and philosophies (Jupiter Rules 9th), and his self-image (Jupiter Almuten 1st). [Blueprint Sentence]
Although the Moon in Aquarius rules his Cancer Ascendant, Jupiter in Capricorn has the most influence, with a total of 6 votes on the Board of Directors. The practical faith that is the fundamental motivation for Pope Francis’ authentic Self is also evident in how he engages with the world.
Mars in Libra in the 3rd House [3 Votes]
Mars Rules 4th, 5th, Almuten 7th
Other people perceive (Ascendant) his need to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is indifferent, mediating, and analytical (Libra), WITH his home and family (Mars Rules 4th), his personal creativity (Mars Rules 5th), and his one-to-one relationships (Mars Almuten 7th). [Blueprint Sentence]
Although Mars in Libra has only 3 votes on the Board of Directors for his Ascendant, it suggests that Pope Francis’ willingness to negotiate and to build bridges is evident in his personality.
Part of Fortune in Taurus in the 11th House
He will experience the greatest amount of prosperity and success (Part of Fortune) by being enduring, faithful, artistic, and strong-willed (Taurus), particularly IN his personal ambitions and his friendships (Part of Fortune in 11th House). [Blueprint Sentence].
At first glance, it seems ironic that Pope Francis’ Part of Fortune is in the sensual, material, luxury-loving sign of Taurus, in the 11th house of personal ambition. But once again, the Board of Directors tells the rest of the story. The board members of the Part of Fortune in Taurus are Venus in Aquarius with 5 votes, and the Moon in Aquarius with 7 votes, both ruled by Saturn in Pisces with 3 votes. Once again, we see the same themes of objectivity, compassion for humanity, and the Aquarian need to put the integrity of the group above the needs of any individuals — and all of this tempered by another dose of practical compassion, with Saturn in Pisces.
Summary of Pope Francis’s Personality
It’s notable how much of Pope Francis’ personality relates directly to the mutual reception between Jupiter in Capricorn and Saturn in Pisces. One way to summarize this energy is “practical compassion,” and that seems to be an apt description of Pope Francis’ approach to life, and to his responsibilities as a world spiritual leader.
Although his Sun in Sagittarius and Ascendant in Cancer are quincunx by sign, his Jupiter in Capricorn is the almuten of both, which suggests an inherent consistency between how he appears to the world, and who he truly is as an individual.
