An astrological portrait of L. Ron Hubbard

The complete chart interpretation covers four main sections: Personality, Relationship Needs, Relationship Wants and the Marriage Blueprint, and Career. This is a "classic" example of an astrological portrait, first published in January 2014.

Each section of the interpretation begins with the completed  “Blueprint Sentence” used as the basis for that portion of the interpretation. These fill-in-the-blank blueprint template sentences are one of the exclusive tools available as part of the curriculum of the Online Natal Astrology Class. The value of these templates is that they ensure the correct relationship between the different parts of speech in the language of astrology. Simply by dropping in the appropriate keywords for signs, elements, modalities and houses, you create an astrologically-sound blueprint that you can use to build a more detailed interpretation of that specific astrological signature.

Part 1: Personality

Elements and Modalities

01 Hubbard Elements

Hubbard has three planets in Earth, three planets in Water, one planet in Fire (Venus in Aries), and no planets in Air. The emphasis on Earth and Water suggests a depth of feeling, and a great deal of comfort in the physical and material world. The “lack” of planets in Air is not at all unusual for a writer: the perceived lack of facility with intellect and communication often drives individuals to work very hard to master these skills. If anything, a “lack” of planets in Air suggests that Hubbard may overcompensate, valuing the abstract and intellectual more highly than the practical (Earth) or the emotional and spiritual (Water).

Fire is the only element where a “lack” of planets does not result in overcompensation. Hubbard would benefit from regular physical exercise to “supplement” the “lack” of fire in his chart. However, with so much Earth and Water energy in his chart, he has a great deal of inertia to overcome. If he were able to establish a routine of daily physical exercise, it would eventually become easier to continue with it (because of the inertia), but getting to that point takes a considerable effort, and once that routine is interrupted, it’s very difficult to get it started again, no matter how much better one feels with the regular exercise. This doesn’t mean that Hubbard won’t take action; only that he won’t tend to act physically.

Hubbard has an even balance among the modalities, with two Cardinal, two Fixed, and three Mutable planets. Because the three mutable planets are the Sun, Moon and Mercury, this suggests a slight emphasis on the Mutable qualities, but we’ll have to see if this plays out as an actual theme in his chart or not.

Sun in Pisces in the 3rd House
Sun Rules 9th, Almuten 4th House

Hubbard seeks to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun) by being artistic, spiritual, secretive, and dreamy (Pisces) WITH his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and higher education (rules 9th house), and his home and family (almuten 4th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Sun in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

On the surface, L Ron Hubbard’s Sun begins to paint an accurate picture of his life. The Sun in the 3rd house shows that he encounters his “Big S” Self through writing and communication, and the Pisces influence suggests an active imagination, two requirements to be a successful science fiction writer. But Hubbard’s Sun also introduces the balance between the 3rd and 9th houses, which hints at his later career as the founder of the pseudo-religion, Scientology.

In traditional astrology the 9th house (God) represents the established religion, while the 3rd house (Goddess) is the house of heresy: any religion, or belief system that does not adhere to the established, accepted religion. In more modern applications (and cultures with greater religious freedom), the 9th house relates to public spirituality (i.e., religion, church affiliation, etc.), while the 3rd relates to one’s personal, private spirituality.

Obviously, this signature could express in an infinite number of ways. Because the Sun is also the Almuten of the 4th house, it could simply indicate someone who has a deep spiritual connection in his life, and that spirituality — and the balance between public and private spirituality — informs the foundation (4th house) of his life. It’s also equally valid to look at the 3rd-9th axis as relating to writing (3rd) and publishing (9th).

We have to look deeper into the hidden motivations of Hubbard’s Sun to get a more comprehensive picture.

Board of Directors for Sun

02 Hubbard Sun

Hubbard’s Sun’s Board of Directors consists of Jupiter in Scorpio, Venus in Aries, and Mars in Capricorn. It’s important to note the dynamic of this Board of Directors: Mars is unquestionably the most important and influential planet. Not only is Mars the Almuten of the Sun, with 6 votes for Triplicity, Term, and Face, but also both Jupiter in Scorpio and Venus in Aries are ruled by Mars in Capricorn.

Mars in Capricorn in the 2nd House [6 Votes, Triplicity, Term, Face]
Mars rules 4th, 11th, 12th, Almuten 2nd

In order to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), he needs to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is practical, ambitious, ruthless, and demanding (Capricorn), WITH his home and family (Rules 4th), his hopes and aspirations (Rules 11th), his unconscious and shadow self (Rules 12th), and his money and resources (Almuten 2nd). He encounters these needs particularly IN his finances and resources (Mars in 2nd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

It’s always telling when Mars, the ego/body and “little s” self has significant influence over the authentic “Big S” Self. Immediately, it’s clear that the fundamental struggle will be to master the ego, and align with the authentic “Big S” Self. Everything in Hubbard’s life — the choices he makes, the experiences he has, and how he expresses the energies in his chart — will depend on whether Mars or the Sun is doing the driving. The more control Mars has, the greater the chance that Hubbard will be acting from First Kingdom/Victim Consciousness. This takes on even greater consequences for Hubbard because Mars rules his 12th house: his ego is the vehicle for his self-sabotage and sorrows.

Mars in Capricorn is extremely powerful, directing the active, action-oriented energy of Mars towards practical, tangible, ambitious Capricorn-based activities. As a Cardinal Earth sign, planets in Capricorn seek to create tangible, enduring, and respected expressions of individual identity. What most matters to Hubbard is that he be able to manifest (Earth/Capricorn) his personal ambitions and aspirations (Mars rules 11th), and he may seek to do this by creating a foundation (4th house), being a father figure (4th house), or by investing in real estate (4th house). He’s also likely to measure his success and accomplishments based on how much money he is able to accumulate in the process (Mars almuten 2nd house).

It’s worth noting that Hubbard’s Mars is conjunct Uranus (and, in fact, is the only planet with any connection to Uranus), and therefore, his actions (and his ego) carry a disruptive energy.

Jupiter in Scorpio in the 11th House [5 Votes, Rulership]
Jupiter Rules 1st house, Almuten 9th House

In order to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), he needs to grow, expand, and experience faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is powerful, sensitive, secretive, and seductive (Scorpio), WITH his personality and sense of self (Rules 1st house) and his beliefs, philosophies, and religion (Almuten 9th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his hopes and aspirations, and his relationships with friends (Jupiter in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Jupiter in Scorpio is the official Ruler of Hubbard’s Sun; however, it reports to Mars in Capricorn, who is not only on the Sun’s Board of Directors, but is also the almuten of the Sun. While Jupiter still has significant influence, it will be filtered and directed through Mars in Capricorn.

With Jupiter, we see another emphasis on the 9th house, but this time, it ties the 9th house to the 1st house of self-image and personality. This suggests that Hubbard identifies (1st house) with his beliefs and philosophies (9th house), and he encounters these in his 11th house of personal ambition, hopes and dreams. On a practical level, this could just as easily support a career in publishing or even academia (9th house); it doesn’t automatically point to religious or spiritual ambitions. That being said, Jupiter is in the secretive, powerful sign of Scorpio, and it’s also trine Neptune, which would tend to enhance the imaginative and spiritual aspects, while at the same time reduce the practical considerations and impair reality testing.

Venus in Aries in the 4th House [4 Votes, Exaltation]
Venus rules 5th, 6th, 10th Houses

In order to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), he needs to feel Validated and align with his Core Values (Venus) in a manner that is assertive, inspiring, headstrong, and overconfident (Aries), WITH his personal creativity, self-expression, and tolerance for risk (Rules 5th house), his job (Rules 6th house), and his career and life path (Rules 10th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his home and family environment (Venus in 4th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

The last component of Hubbard’s Sun is Venus in Aries, who also reports directly to Mars in Capricorn. Venus in Aries influence on the Sun’s Board of Directors suggests that Hubbard has a fundamental need to be loved and appreciated (Venus) for his individual identity (Aries/Sun’s Board of Directors). Because Mars rules Venus in Aries, however, there is a very strong ego-based undercurrent to these needs. The higher-consciousness expressions of Venus in Aries are about expressing individuality and identity for the sheer joy of being authentic and pioneering; the lower-consciousness, ego-driven expressions, however, are far more interested in receiving adoration and validation from other people, which, of course, simply feeds and inflates the ego, strengthening its influence.

We’ll explore Venus in Aries in greater detail in the next section, but for now, it’s enough to note that Venus’s need for self-expression and validation is focused on the 5th house of personal creativity, the 6th house job, and the 10th house career. Even though Hubbard encounters these needs in his private life (Venus in 4th house), they still point to a desire for public and professional validation of his identity.

Neptune in the 8th House Trine Sun in 3rd House (Rules 9th, Almuten 4th) [2s46]

There is an easy, constant, flow of energy (Trine) CAUSED BY dissolving boundaries, fantasy, glamour and illusion (Neptune) COMING FROM shared resources and other people’s values and opinions (Neptune in 8th house) and AFFECTING his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Sun in 3rd house). This could interfere with his ability to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun), particularly WITH his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and higher education (rules 9th house), and his home and family (almuten 4th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

The Sun trine Neptune can be a challenging aspect, especially while navigating the lower levels of consciousness. Once the ego is tamed and transcended, Neptune’s influence helps dissolve the boundaries and limitations of the “little s” self, and encourages the free and full expression of the authentic “Big S” Self. Until that time, however, Neptune’s energies can make it difficult to discern the boundaries and structures of the “little s” self. Spirituality, fantasy, glamour, and illusion can all become traps whereby the ego attempts to bypass the pain of Victim Consciousness without accepting accountability or moving into integrity.

Pluto in the 7th House Square Sun in 3rd House (Rules 9th, Almuten 4th) [4a15]

Friction, tension, stress and conflict (Square) are CAUSED BY issues of power, control, and manipulation (Pluto) COMING FROM other people and his one-to-one relationships (Pluto in 7th) and AFFECTING his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Sun in 3rd house). This could interfere with his ability to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun), particularly WITH his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and higher education (rules 9th house), and his home and family (almuten 4th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Hubbard’s Sun is applying to a square to Pluto in the 7th house. On its own, the Sun square Pluto aspect can be an extremely useful tool that can reveal the true source of one’s personal power, and ultimately help to align with the authentic “Big S” Self. The challenge here is that coming from the 7th house, Hubbard will instinctively project the Pluto issues of power, control, and manipulation on other individuals. This frequently energizes the ego and the “little s” self, resulting in the need to be right, and the desire for power and control over others (so that others can no longer control us).

Ascendant in Sagittarius

When he interacts with the world and other individuals, he appears to be free-thinking, profound, overconfident, and evangelistic (Sagittarius). [Blueprint Sentence]

Obviously, I was a little biased in the keywords I chose for Sagittarius, but then again, Hubbard presented these Sagittarian qualities to the world in a rather big way. It’s also worth noting that while his Sagittarius Ascendant is Mutable, both of the planets on the Ascendant’s Board of Directors, Jupiter in Scorpio and Saturn in Taurus, are in Fixed signs (the only two Fixed planets in Hubbard’s chart). This suggests that there’s quite a bit of resolve operating beneath the surface.

Ascendant’s Board of Directors

03 Hubbard Ascendant

Jupiter in Scorpio in the 11th House [8 Votes, Rulership, Triplicity]
Jupiter Rules 1st house, Almuten 9th House

Other people perceive (Ascendant) his need to grow, expand, and experience faith in a manner that is that is powerful, sensitive, secretive, and seductive (Scorpio), WITH his personality and sense of self (Rules 1st house) and his beliefs, philosophies, and religion (Almuten 9th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

We’ve already explored Jupiter in Scorpio as the Ruler of Hubbard’s Sun. That Jupiter is also the ruler of his Ascendant suggests a strong connection between his personality and his authentic “Big S” Self, but we’ll address this shortly.

Saturn in Taurus in the 4th House [3 Votes, Term + Face]
Saturn Rules 2nd, 3rd House, Almuten 10th House

Other people perceive (Ascendant) his need to establish boundaries, limits and structures, and accept responsibility (Saturn) in a manner that is dependable, sensual, materialistic, and unrelenting (Taurus), WITH his money and resources (Rules 2nd), his writing and communication (Rules 3rd), and his career and life path (Almuten 10th). [Blueprint Sentence]

Saturn has little influence with regards to Hubbard’s personality, as Jupiter dominates the Board of Directors for his Ascendant. However, Saturn’s presence here reinforces the importance of the 2nd house of money, the 3rd house of writing and communication, and the 10th house of career in the context of Hubbard’s personality.

Part of Fortune in Cancer in the 7th House

04 Hubbard POF

He will experience the greatest amount of prosperity and success (Part of Fortune) by being protective, merciful, prudent, and nurturing (Cancer), particularly IN his partnerships, marriage, and one-to-one relationships (7th House). [Blueprint Sentence].

It’s worth noting that because we tend to project planets in the 7th house on other people, we could view Hubbard’s Part of Fortune in Cancer in the 7th house as an indication that his fortune and success might be the result of other people’s generosity and dependence.

The Board of Directors for Hubbard’s Part of Fortune includes the Moon in Virgo with 5 Votes, Jupiter in Scorpio with 7 votes, and Mars in Capricorn with 3 votes. Jupiter’s influence is what matters the most here, and since we’ve already explored Jupiter and Mars (and will explore the Moon in the next section), we’ll move on.

Summary of Hubbard’s Personality

There are several important factors about L. Ron Hubbard’s chart that need to be considered at this point.

First, we’re beginning to see how powerful and influential his Mars in Capricorn is. Mars not only has absolute control over Hubbard’s Sun, but it will also be a driving factor with Hubbard’s Validation Needs. Mars has influence over four houses in Hubbard’s chart (Rules 4th, 11th, and 12th, Almuten 2nd), and, because Mars is the ruler of the 12th house, Mars is also the vehicle for Hubbard’s self-sabotage and sorrows. What hasn’t been addressed yet with respect to Mars is the close conjunction between Mars and Uranus, and the fact that Hubbard’s Mars is very close to the end of Capricorn. The Uranus conjunction suggests that Hubbard’s Mars (and his ego) will tend to be electric, unexpected, and disruptive. That Mars is getting ready to move from Capricorn to Aquarius might suggest the energy will be directed towards change. And let’s not forget that when Mars moves from Capricorn (where it’s exceptionally strong) to Aquarius, where it loses all Essential Dignity, that the transition from the practical (Capricorn/Earth) to the abstract (Aquarius/Air) is not necessarily positive.

Mars’ influence is felt directly and indirectly across all facets of Hubbard’s personality. Mars is the almuten of his Sun, and has 3 votes on the Board of Directors for his Part of Fortune, but Mars in Capricorn rules Jupiter in Scorpio, the ruler of Hubbard’s Sun in Pisces and Ascendant in Sagittarius, and the almuten of his Part of Fortune in Cancer. Jupiter in Scorpio is a unifying force in Hubbard’s personality. Even though Hubbard’s Sun is square his Ascendant, suggesting some conflict between his authentic Self and how he presents to the world, both the Sun and the Ascendant are ruled by Jupiter, so this diffuses and focuses the issue, also suggesting that the most visible expression of Hubbard’s personality is his powerful, secretive, and expansive Jupiter in Scorpio…and we may as well notice the partile trine between Jupiter in Scorpio and Mercury in Pisces in the 3rd house which suggests that communication (Mercury, 3rd house) is a key part of how Hubbard grows and expresses (Jupiter).

It’s also fascinating, if unsurprising, to note that four out of five of Hubbard’s personal planets are in aspect to Neptune (Moon semi-square Neptune, Sun trine Neptune, Mercury trine Neptune, Venus square Neptune, Jupiter trine Neptune). And the Sun trine Neptune tells us that Neptune is stationary, preparing to turn direct. There’s no question that Hubbard was a vehicle for the energy of Neptune. Unfortunately, as is so often the case, Hubbard managed to twist the pure, creative, spiritual vibration of Neptune into something that served his ego rather than allowing Neptune to dissolve the “little s” self and reveal a higher dimension of Truth. Perhaps it’s significant that Mars, the ego and “little s” self, is the only planet not in aspect to Neptune (and the only planet that aspects Uranus).

Part 2: Relationship Needs

Moon in Virgo in the 9th House
Moon Rules 8th House, Almuten 5th and 6th Houses

In order to feel Safe (Moon), he needs to feel competent, analytical, critical, and pedantic (Virgo) WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). He encounters these needs particularly IN his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and cross-cultural experiences (9th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Although the Moon in Virgo gives Hubbard an Earth Safety Checklist, Mercury’s influence over Virgo means that Hubbard needs more than physical and material support in order to feel Safe; he also needs to have a level of intellectual and mental understanding. When the Moon in Virgo feels unsafe, it first needs to analyze and understand exactly why it’s feeling unsafe, and then needs to be able to adapt or change the circumstances (Mutable Earth) to restore a sense of safety.

The smallest details matter to the Moon in Virgo, and they are especially important to Hubbard in his 8th house of shared resources, other people’s money, and other people’s values and opinions. It’s also relevant, given the nature of Scientology, that the 8th house also rules the occult; it’s hidden, private, and relates to all forms of secret societies. Details are also important to Hubbard in his 5th house creativity, and his 6th house job, because the Moon is the Almuten of these houses. Any disruptions in these areas of Hubbard’s life will cause him to feel unsafe, and he will act out in his 9th house affairs, looking to his religion, his beliefs and philosophies, and higher education to restore his sense of safety.

Board of Directors for the Moon

05 Hubbard Moon

Mercury in Pisces in the 3rd House [11 Votes, Rulership, Exaltation, Term]
Mercury Rules 7th House

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), he needs to communicate and understand (Mercury) in a manner that is intuitive, artistic, nebulous, and scattered (Pisces) WITH his marriage, partnerships, and relationships with other individuals (Rules 7th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Mercury in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Hubbard’s Mercury is in a partile trine to his Jupiter in Scorpio (which also rules Mercury in Pisces), and is also applying to a trine to Neptune in the 8th house. Objectively, this could mean that Hubbard had constant, automatic, effortless access (trine) to unlimited creative potential (Neptune), plus expanded faith and imagination (Jupiter). While one could explore the higher spiritual possibilities of this configuration, accessing the more positive uses of this energy is, frankly, rare. Mercury, as the Archetype of the Storyteller, is in charge of our experience of reality, and the overwhelming influence of Jupiter and Neptune raise serious concerns about Hubbard’s relationship with reality. Hubbard had a lifelong history of living in a world of his own making, creating a personal history that distorted facts and misrepresented his accomplishments and abilities.

What this suggests is that whenever Hubbard feels unsafe, instead of seeking to understand the issues so they can be resolved, he rewrites the entire story. The influence of Jupiter and Neptune on his Mercury in Pisces means that Hubbard is able to have absolute faith in whatever story he tells. And because Neptune is a transpersonal planet, the fantasy world he creates also resonates with other people. It’s unfortunate that rather than serving a higher purpose, Hubbard used his prodigious creative abilities to serve and inflate his ego.

Moon in Virgo in the 9th House [3 Votes, Triplicity]
Moon Rules 8th House, Almuten 5th and 6th Houses

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), he needs to express emotions and feelings (Moon) in a manner that competent, analytical, critical, and pedantic (Virgo) WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). He encounters these needs particularly IN his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and cross-cultural experiences (9th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

The Moon’s 3 votes on its own Board of Directors are not terribly significant, as Mercury in Pisces has absolute control over Hubbard’s Safety Needs. Hubbard’s need to express his feelings and emotions is present, but also completely overshadowed by his need to communicate and understand in order to feel Safe.

Saturn in the 4th House (Rules 2nd, 3rd, Almuten 10th) Trine Moon in Virgo in the 9th House (Rules 8th, Almuten 5th and 6th) [2a43]
Saturn has no votes on Moon’s Board of Directors; Moon co-almuten of Saturn with 7 Votes on Saturn’s BOD (Exaltation and Triplicity)

There is a constant, effortless flow of energy (Trine) BETWEEN his need for boundaries, limitations, structure, and responsibility (Saturn), SPECIFICALLY INVOLVING his money and resources (Saturn Rules 2nd), his writing and communication (Saturn Rules 3rd), and his career and life path (Saturn Almuten 10th) COMING FROM his home and family and his private life (Saturn in 4th House) AND his need to feel Safe (Moon) WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). This could help him to feel Safe IN his beliefs, philosophies, higher education, and religion (Moon in 9th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Even though Saturn is not on the Moon’s Board of Directors, aspects between the Moon and Saturn are always worth exploring in the context of Safety Needs, because they may represent challenges to feeling Safe. Hubbard’s Moon trine Saturn, however, does not pose any challenges, and in fact, it supports Hubbard’s ability to feel Safe. Saturn in Taurus’ Board of Directors is heavily influenced by the Moon, and because the Moon and Saturn are trine each other, this suggests that Saturn has a very supportive connection with the Moon. Hubbard will be able to receive deposits in his Safety Need account from the houses ruled by Saturn: his 2nd house of money, his 3rd house of writing and communication, and this 10th house of career. This does, however, suggest that Hubbard may form attachments to these houses, and in particular he may look to the 2nd house of money to meet his Safety Needs, because after all, the Moon in Virgo is in Earth.

Neptune in the 8th House Semi-Square Moon in 9th House (Rules 8th, Almuten 5th and 6th) [2a45]

There is a minor internal tension or friction (Semi-Square) CAUSED BY dissolving boundaries, fantasy, glamour and illusion (Neptune) COMING FROM shared resources and other people’s values and opinions (Neptune in 8th house) and AFFECTING his beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon in 9th House). This could cause him to feel unsafe (Moon) particularly WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

The connection between the Moon and Neptune is minor, and mainly suggests poor boundaries and heightened sensitivity, which would tend to drain his Safety Need Account gradually. As mentioned above, the bigger issue is the trine between Mercury and Neptune, which represents the easy escape route. When Hubbard feels unsafe, he retreats even further into the fantasy world where he has absolute power.

Chiron in the 3rd House Opposite Moon in 9th House (Rules 8th, Almuten 5th and 6th) [2a34]

There is a need for balance and compromise (Opposition) CAUSED BY his core wound (Chiron) COMING FROM his early education, childhood, communication, personal spirituality, and daily habits (Chiron in 3rd House) and AFFECTING his beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon in 9th House). This could cause him to feel unsafe (Moon) particularly WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Hubbard’s Chiron wound opposing his Moon simply reinforces all of the patterns we’ve addressed so far. The potential of Chiron in Pisces in the 3rd house is to confront a deeply wounded sense of spirituality, and as a result, experience a profound healing and transformation. Had Hubbard been able to master his “little s” self and move into integrity, he may well have become a true spiritual teacher.

Venus in Aries in the 4th House
Venus Rules 5th, 6th, 10th Houses

In order to feel validated (Venus), he needs to be assertive, inspiring, headstrong, and overconfident (Aries), WITH his personal creativity, self-expression, and tolerance for risk (Rules 5th house), his job (Rules 6th house), and his career and life path (Rules 10th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his home and family environment (Venus in 4th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Venus in Aries gives Hubbard a Fire Validation Checklist, and indeed, Venus in Aries is the only planet in Fire in his chart. Feeling loved and appreciated depends on his ability to take action and express his individuality, and being able to follow his own impulses matters far more than taking other people’s needs or desires into consideration. Unfortunately for Hubbard, Venus in Aries shares the same traps of egotism, narcissism, and self-aggrandizement that show up as potential pitfalls elsewhere in his chart.

Little is known (or at least little is verifiable) about Hubbard’s relationship with his father, save that his father was in the Navy, and absent from Hubbard’s life for much of his childhood (Hubbard was raised by his aunt). With Venus in the 4th house, however, it’s reasonable to suggest that Hubbard was driven by the need to gain the love and approval of his father, and that he would seek this approval through his creativity and adventurousness (5th house), his job (6th house), and his career and public life (10th house). Hubbard did follow his father’s lead and pursued a career in the Navy, although there’s a vast difference between the official reports of his dismal naval career and Hubbard’s claims of being “highly decorated” as an officer.

It’s worth considering some apparent contradictions in Hubbard’s chart. With Venus in Aries as the only planet in Fire in his chart, it appears unlikely that Hubbard would be particularly athletic, and yet various accounts of Hubbard’s early life suggest that he was a courageous adventurer. Too many of these claims have proved to be exaggerated, and it’s more likely that they’re the product of Hubbard’s fantasies. What all of these stories have in common, however, is that they feed Hubbard’s ego, setting him up so that he can be validated and admired.

Board of Directors for Venus

06 Hubbard Venus

We’ll look at the blueprint sentences for the board members, and then explore the dynamic of the Board of Directors as a whole.

Mars in Capricorn in the 2nd House [5 Votes, Rulership]
Mars rules 4th, 11th, 12th, Almuten 2nd

He wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors) FOR his ability to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is practical, ambitious, ruthless, and demanding (Capricorn), WITH his home and family (Rules 4th), his hopes and aspirations (Rules 11th), his unconscious and shadow self (Rules 12th), and his money and resources (Almuten 2nd). He encounters these needs particularly IN his finances and resources (Mars in 2nd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Sun in Pisces in the 3rd House [5 Votes, Exaltation and Face]
Sun Rules 9th House, Almuten 4th

He wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors) FOR his ability to express his authentic “Big S” Self and align with his Personal Standards of Integrity (Sun) in a manner that is artistic, spiritual, secretive, and dreamy (Pisces) WITH his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and higher education (rules 9th house), and his home and family (almuten 4th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Sun in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Jupiter in Scorpio in the 11th House [3 Votes, Triplicity]
Jupiter Rules 1st house, Almuten 9th House

He wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors) FOR his ability to grow, expand, and experience faith in a manner that is that is powerful, sensitive, secretive, and seductive (Scorpio), WITH his personality and sense of self (Rules 1st house) and his beliefs, philosophies, and religion (Almuten 9th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his hopes and aspirations, and his relationships with friends (Jupiter in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Mercury in Pisces in the 3rd House [2 Votes, Term]
Mercury Rules 7th House

He wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors), FOR his ability to communicate and understand (Mercury) in a manner that is intuitive, artistic, nebulous, and scattered (Pisces) WITH his marriage, partnerships, and relationships with other individuals (Rules 7th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Mercury in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Summary of Venus in Aries’ Board of Directors

Once again, we have a situation where Mars in Capricorn has absolute control. Mars rules Jupiter in Scorpio, which in turn rules the Sun and Mercury in Pisces. Mars also has absolute control over the Boards of Directors for Hubbard’s Sun, Jupiter, and Mercury. There’s no escaping Hubbard’s ego, or the likelihood that he would go to great lengths to feed and flatter it. While this is by no means a common expression of Venus in Aries, given all of the factors at play, and, of course, biased by Hubbard’s actual life choices, it’s hard to imagine him thinking of other people as independent, equal individuals.

Fortunately, most people who struggle with the ego traps of Venus in Aries eventually learn that the world does not revolve around them and they can’t always get what they want. They learn to tame the ego, and align with the “Big S” Self. But in Hubbard’s case, his arrogance and his sheer force of imagination and belief created a “little r” reality filled with sycophants and acolytes who were always ready to cater to his every whim.

Neptune in the 8th House Square Venus in 4th House (Rules 5th, 6th, 10th Houses) [1a54]

Friction, tension, stress and conflict (Square) are CAUSED BY dissolving boundaries, fantasy, glamour and illusion (Neptune) COMING FROM shared resources and other people’s values and opinions (Neptune in 8th house) and AFFECTING his home and family (Venus in 4th House). This could cause him to feel invalidated (Venus) particularly WITH his personal creativity (5th House), his job (6th House), and his career and life path (10th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Venus square Neptune can be a challenging aspect. In romantic relationships, it is often linked to patterns of deception and betrayal. Neptune’s influence can glamorize and romanticize our partners, showing us what we want to see, and hiding what’s really there. Eventually we have to face reality, although many will prolong the fantasy with self-delusion until the bitter end. In Hubbard’s case, because Neptune is in the 8th house of other people’s values and opinions, this will be the source of the deception and betrayal. Hubbard is heavily invested in being perceived (and validated) for a false persona, and invested tremendous time and resources in an attempt to manipulate public opinion of himself. Case in point, the “authorized” biography put forth by the Church of Scientology is wildly exaggerated (to say the least), while the Church actively attempts to suppress any “unauthorized” information about Hubbard.

Chiron in the 3rd House Semi-Square Venus in 4th House (Rules 5th, 6th, 10th Houses) [1a42]

There is a minor internal tension or friction (Semi-Square) CAUSED BY his core wound (Chiron) COMING FROM his early education, childhood, communication, personal spirituality, and daily habits (Chiron in 3rd House) and AFFECTING his home and family (Venus in 4th House). This could cause him to feel invalidated (Venus) particularly WITH his personal creativity (5th House), his job (6th House), and his career and life path (10th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

This is a minor aspect. It doesn’t interfere with Hubbard’s ability to meet his Validation Needs, but it does suggest that a lack of love and appreciation in his childhood may motivate his pursuit of approval and success in later life.

Summary of Relationship Needs: Connection between Moon and Venus

Moon in Virgo Sesquiquadrate Venus in Aries [0a41]

Hubbard’s Moon and Venus are in a very tight, applying Sesquiquadrate (135°) aspect. Sesquiquadrates, like squares, suggest tension, friction, and conflict that can lead to action; however, as an 8th harmonic aspect, it tends to play out on the mental plane, rather than on the physical plane. This aspect presents a minor challenge, because deposits in his Safety Need account may trigger small withdrawals from his Validation Need account, and vice versa. This is a far less serious challenge than if the Moon and Venus were actually quincunx each other, an aspect that makes it exceptionally difficult to meet both needs at the same time.

From everything that we’ve explored so far, it seems likely that Hubbard relied on meeting his Validation Needs to make up for a fundamental, ongoing lack of safety. Whenever he felt unsafe, he would retreat further into his fantasy world, where he would soothe and feed his ego by fabricating tales of his incredible accomplishments. The bigger the ego gets, the more vulnerable it becomes, and the less Safe he feels, resulting in a vicious circle.

It’s no wonder that Hubbard and the Church of Scientology were such vocal opponents of psychology and psychiatry. By any accepted standards of mental health, Hubbard would certainly have been diagnosed with severe mental illness.

Part 3: Relationship Wants

Descendant in Gemini / Vertex in Leo (in the 8th House)

On a conscious level (Descendant), Hubbard will be attracted to partners who embody the Gemini qualities of being charming, intelligent, sociable, and articulate. Gemini on the Descendant also suggests that he’s attracted to younger partners. Because Hubbard lacks any planets in Air in his chart, he is likely to be very drawn to partners who embody the energy of Air. While Gemini is square his Moon in Virgo by sign, Mercury rules both signs, and therefore the Descendant in Gemini partners have a reasonable chance at meeting Hubbard’s Safety Needs. They have a much better chance of meeting his Venus in Aries Validation Needs, however, because Aries and Gemini are sextile by sign.

On an unconscious level (Vertex), Hubbard is drawn to partners who embody the Leo qualities, and are courageous, dramatic, loyal, and outgoing. These partners will do an excellent job of meeting his Venus in Aries Validation Needs, but they will have a hard time meeting his Moon in Virgo Safety Needs.

5th House: Love Affairs
Venus in Aries in the 4th House
Venus Rules 5th, 6th, and 10th Houses

07 Hubbard 5th

L. Ron Hubbard looks for casual romantic partners (5th house) who align with his need to feel Validated and align with his Core Values (Venus) in a manner that is assertive, inspiring, headstrong, and overconfident (Aries), WITH his personal creativity, self-expression, and tolerance for risk (Rules 5th house), his job (Rules 6th house), and his career and life path (Rules 10th house). He is most likely to meet these partners IN his home and personal life (Venus in 4th House) [Blueprint Sentence]

Obviously, it’s odd to say that with the ruler of the 5th in the 4th, that Hubbard will meet his romantic partners in his home and personal life, so let’s address that first. In a broader sense, the 4th house relates to our foundation, ancestry, and tribe. In Hubbard’s case, it’s reasonable to interpret his “tribe” as his acolytes and devotees, and so we could assume he would select his lovers from there. This makes sense, as we can assume from what we’ve explored so far about Hubbard, that what he finds most attractive in a potential romantic partner is their willingness to worship him and cater to his every whim.

Venus in Aries partners, however, are likely to be far too independent for anything other than a brief, passionate, and mainly physical encounter.

7th House: Marriage
Mercury in Pisces in the 3rd House
Mercury Rules 7th House

08 Hubbard 7th

L. Ron Hubbard marriage and relationships with other individuals (7th house) involve being able to communicate and understand (Mercury) in a manner that is intuitive, artistic, nebulous, and scattered (Pisces) WITH his marriage, partnerships, and relationships with other individuals (Rules 7th house). He is most likely to meet these partners IN his familiar environment, and his daily routine (Mercury in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Again, we see the suggestion that Hubbard doesn’t have to look very far to find his romantic partners. While his 5th house lovers are apt to be passionate and independent (and perhaps offer him the thrill of the chase), his 7th house partners are far more likely to believe what they’re told and suffer in relative silence as they make Hubbard the center of their universe.

11th House: Friendships
Mars in Capricorn in the 2nd House
Mars rules 4th, 11th, 12th, Almuten 2nd

09 Hubbard 11th

L. Ron Hubbard is likely to become friends (11th house) with people who align with his need to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is practical, ambitious, ruthless, and demanding (Capricorn), WITH his home and family (Rules 4th), his hopes and aspirations (Rules 11th), his unconscious and shadow self (Rules 12th), and his money and resources (Almuten 2nd). He is most likely to meet these partners IN his financial dealings (Mars in 2nd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Hubbard’s friends would tend to be people of similar wealth and influence, who also share Hubbard’s drive and ambition. While Hubbard would initially be attracted to these men (it’s too much to imagine Hubbard being friends with a woman), it’s inevitable that his ego would begin to view them as threats.

Connections Between 5th, 7th and 11th Houses

Mars in Capricorn, the Ruler of the 11th house rules Venus in Aries, the ruler of the 5th house, suggesting that he may choose a friend (11th house) to become a lover (5th house). There’s also an easy connection between the 5th and 7th houses: Venus, the ruler of the 5th has 4 votes on Mercury in Pisces (Ruler of 7th) Board of Directors, and both Boards of Directors are heavily influenced by Mars and Jupiter. It’s unlikely, however, that anyone would be able to move from a 5th or 7th house relationship to an 11th house friendship.

Marriage Blueprint

Father (Ruler of 4th House):
Mars in Capricorn in the 2nd House
Mars rules 4th, 11th, 12th, Almuten 2nd

Mother (Ruler of 10th House):
Venus in Aries in the 4th House
Venus Rules 5th, 6th, and 10th Houses

10 Hubbard Parents

There’s no question as to who has the power in Hubbard’s Marriage Blueprint. His father (Mars in Capricorn) is strongly dignified, while his mother (Venus in Aries) is even more strongly debilitated, being peregrine and in Detriment. Moreover, he would have experienced his mother as being kept on an exceptionally short leash. Not only does Mars (father) rule Venus (mother), but his mother is IN his father’s house (Venus in 4th house).

By all accounts, Hubbard embodied the very worst elements of his Marriage Blueprint. He was married three times, and there is much evidence that he subjected his wives to prolonged psychological abuse.

Part 4: Career

To consider L. Ron Hubbard’s career, we’ll look at the 10th house (Career), 6th house (Job) and 2nd house (Money).

10th House: Career
6th House: Job

11 Hubbard 6th10th

Venus in Aries rules both Hubbard’s 6th and 10th houses.

Venus in Aries in the 4th House [4 Votes, Exaltation]
Venus rules 5th, 6th, 10th Houses

L. Ron Hubbard career and life path (10th house) and his job (6th house) both involve feeling Validated and aligning with his Core Values (Venus) in a manner that is assertive, inspiring, headstrong, and overconfident (Aries), WITH his personal creativity, self-expression, and tolerance for risk (Rules 5th house. He encounters these needs particularly IN his home and family environment (Venus in 4th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

After his failed tour in the Navy, Hubbard drew on his 5th house creativity and built his first successful career as a science fiction writer, a job that he could do from home (Venus in 4th house). And of course, Hubbard’s ego was a driving factor in every phase of his professional life.

We’ve already explored the Board of Directors for Venus in Aries in detail.

2nd House: Money
Saturn in Taurus in the 4th House
Saturn Rules 2nd, 3rd House, Almuten 10th House

12 Hubbard 2nd

The way that L. Ron Hubbard earns money (2nd house) involves establishing boundaries, limits and structures, and accepting responsibility (Saturn) in a manner that is dependable, sensual, materialistic, and unrelenting (Taurus), WITH his writing and communication (Rules 3rd), and his career and life path (Almuten 10th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his home and family environment (Saturn in 4th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

This is the first time that Saturn has shown up in Hubbard’s chart in any significant way. Saturn has always been in the background, of course, because Mars in Capricorn reports to Saturn in Taurus. This suggests that the ultimate motivation for Hubbard has always been money. We saw the suggestion of this when we explored Hubbard’s Safety Needs, with the trine between Saturn in Taurus and the Moon in Virgo.

As the ruler of the 2nd house, Saturn in Taurus advocates conspicuous wealth and a life of luxury. At its peak, the Church of Scientology reportedly earned $100 million a year.

2nd House Ruler (Saturn in Taurus) Board of Directors

The Board of Directors for Hubbard’s Saturn in Taurus consists of his Venus in Aries with 7 votes (Rulership and Term), his Moon in Virgo with 7 votes (Exaltation and Triplicity), and his Mercury in Pisces with 1 vote (Face).

Saturn and the Moon are the only two planets in Hubbard’s chart where Mars does not have direct control over the Board of Directors. Mars does, however, have indirect influence over Saturn’s Board of Directors because Mars rules Venus in Aries. The Mars-Venus-Saturn committee is the center of Hubbard’s dispositor tree. Every other planet in his chart ultimately reports back to this committee, although the Sun, Mercury, and Moon go through Jupiter in Scorpio and report to Mars.

The motivations for Saturn, then are Safety (Moon) and Validation (Venus), and Saturn ruling the 2nd house shows that Hubbard attempted to meet both of these needs by accumulating as much money as possible.

Connections Between Career Houses

With Venus in Aries ruling both the 6th house job and 10th house career, it’s obvious that Hubbard’s job and career/life path are one and the same thing. And since Venus also rules Saturn in Taurus, the ruler of his 2nd house, he is quite capable of making money in his chosen field.

Summary

L Ron Hubbard’s chart is quite fascinating, and his life is an object lesson in the levels of consciousness.

Mars is, without question, the single most important planet in Hubbard’s chart. Mars in Capricorn has absolute direct control over the Boards of Directors for the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter. With Mars conjunct Uranus, it’s hardly surprising that anger was a driving force throughout his life, and (as Mars rules the 12th house), Hubbard’s anger and extremely short temper were frequently the cause of his undoing.

Mastering his anger and taming his ego and “little s” self was of absolute importance in Hubbard’s life. Had he managed to do this, and been able to create from integrity rather than from the depths of Victim Consciousness, he could have made a tremendous, positive difference in the world. Unfortunately, everything he created only served to cater to his massive narcissistic ego.

Hubbard would not have been nearly as influential if it were not for the trines between his Mercury in Pisces, Jupiter in Scorpio, and Neptune in Cancer. These aspects show the easy, automatic escape into fantasy that enabled Hubbard to avoid accepting accountability. When the world failed to cater to Hubbard’s ego, he simply altered reality by changing the story — and the trine to Jupiter made it easy for him to have so much faith in the lies he told that, at least within the bubble he created, those lies became real.

That every planet in Hubbard’s chart, except for Mars, is in some close aspect to Neptune indicates that Hubbard was a vehicle for the collective unconscious. This is why he was so seductive and so successful in attracting millions of followers willing to believe his version of reality because it offers them an escape from the pain in their own lives.
