Part 2: Relationship Needs

Moon in Virgo in the 9th House
Moon Rules 8th House, Almuten 5th and 6th Houses

In order to feel Safe (Moon), he needs to feel competent, analytical, critical, and pedantic (Virgo) WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). He encounters these needs particularly IN his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and cross-cultural experiences (9th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Although the Moon in Virgo gives Hubbard an Earth Safety Checklist, Mercury’s influence over Virgo means that Hubbard needs more than physical and material support in order to feel Safe; he also needs to have a level of intellectual and mental understanding. When the Moon in Virgo feels unsafe, it first needs to analyze and understand exactly why it’s feeling unsafe, and then needs to be able to adapt or change the circumstances (Mutable Earth) to restore a sense of safety.

The smallest details matter to the Moon in Virgo, and they are especially important to Hubbard in his 8th house of shared resources, other people’s money, and other people’s values and opinions. It’s also relevant, given the nature of Scientology, that the 8th house also rules the occult; it’s hidden, private, and relates to all forms of secret societies. Details are also important to Hubbard in his 5th house creativity, and his 6th house job, because the Moon is the Almuten of these houses. Any disruptions in these areas of Hubbard’s life will cause him to feel unsafe, and he will act out in his 9th house affairs, looking to his religion, his beliefs and philosophies, and higher education to restore his sense of safety.

Board of Directors for the Moon

05 Hubbard Moon

Mercury in Pisces in the 3rd House [11 Votes, Rulership, Exaltation, Term]
Mercury Rules 7th House

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), he needs to communicate and understand (Mercury) in a manner that is intuitive, artistic, nebulous, and scattered (Pisces) WITH his marriage, partnerships, and relationships with other individuals (Rules 7th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Mercury in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Hubbard’s Mercury is in a partile trine to his Jupiter in Scorpio (which also rules Mercury in Pisces), and is also applying to a trine to Neptune in the 8th house. Objectively, this could mean that Hubbard had constant, automatic, effortless access (trine) to unlimited creative potential (Neptune), plus expanded faith and imagination (Jupiter). While one could explore the higher spiritual possibilities of this configuration, accessing the more positive uses of this energy is, frankly, rare. Mercury, as the Archetype of the Storyteller, is in charge of our experience of reality, and the overwhelming influence of Jupiter and Neptune raise serious concerns about Hubbard’s relationship with reality. Hubbard had a lifelong history of living in a world of his own making, creating a personal history that distorted facts and misrepresented his accomplishments and abilities.

What this suggests is that whenever Hubbard feels unsafe, instead of seeking to understand the issues so they can be resolved, he rewrites the entire story. The influence of Jupiter and Neptune on his Mercury in Pisces means that Hubbard is able to have absolute faith in whatever story he tells. And because Neptune is a transpersonal planet, the fantasy world he creates also resonates with other people. It’s unfortunate that rather than serving a higher purpose, Hubbard used his prodigious creative abilities to serve and inflate his ego.

Moon in Virgo in the 9th House [3 Votes, Triplicity]
Moon Rules 8th House, Almuten 5th and 6th Houses

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), he needs to express emotions and feelings (Moon) in a manner that competent, analytical, critical, and pedantic (Virgo) WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). He encounters these needs particularly IN his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and cross-cultural experiences (9th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

The Moon’s 3 votes on its own Board of Directors are not terribly significant, as Mercury in Pisces has absolute control over Hubbard’s Safety Needs. Hubbard’s need to express his feelings and emotions is present, but also completely overshadowed by his need to communicate and understand in order to feel Safe.

Saturn in the 4th House (Rules 2nd, 3rd, Almuten 10th) Trine Moon in Virgo in the 9th House (Rules 8th, Almuten 5th and 6th) [2a43]
Saturn has no votes on Moon’s Board of Directors; Moon co-almuten of Saturn with 7 Votes on Saturn’s BOD (Exaltation and Triplicity)

There is a constant, effortless flow of energy (Trine) BETWEEN his need for boundaries, limitations, structure, and responsibility (Saturn), SPECIFICALLY INVOLVING his money and resources (Saturn Rules 2nd), his writing and communication (Saturn Rules 3rd), and his career and life path (Saturn Almuten 10th) COMING FROM his home and family and his private life (Saturn in 4th House) AND his need to feel Safe (Moon) WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). This could help him to feel Safe IN his beliefs, philosophies, higher education, and religion (Moon in 9th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Even though Saturn is not on the Moon’s Board of Directors, aspects between the Moon and Saturn are always worth exploring in the context of Safety Needs, because they may represent challenges to feeling Safe. Hubbard’s Moon trine Saturn, however, does not pose any challenges, and in fact, it supports Hubbard’s ability to feel Safe. Saturn in Taurus’ Board of Directors is heavily influenced by the Moon, and because the Moon and Saturn are trine each other, this suggests that Saturn has a very supportive connection with the Moon. Hubbard will be able to receive deposits in his Safety Need account from the houses ruled by Saturn: his 2nd house of money, his 3rd house of writing and communication, and this 10th house of career. This does, however, suggest that Hubbard may form attachments to these houses, and in particular he may look to the 2nd house of money to meet his Safety Needs, because after all, the Moon in Virgo is in Earth.

Neptune in the 8th House Semi-Square Moon in 9th House (Rules 8th, Almuten 5th and 6th) [2a45]

There is a minor internal tension or friction (Semi-Square) CAUSED BY dissolving boundaries, fantasy, glamour and illusion (Neptune) COMING FROM shared resources and other people’s values and opinions (Neptune in 8th house) and AFFECTING his beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon in 9th House). This could cause him to feel unsafe (Moon) particularly WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

The connection between the Moon and Neptune is minor, and mainly suggests poor boundaries and heightened sensitivity, which would tend to drain his Safety Need Account gradually. As mentioned above, the bigger issue is the trine between Mercury and Neptune, which represents the easy escape route. When Hubbard feels unsafe, he retreats even further into the fantasy world where he has absolute power.

Chiron in the 3rd House Opposite Moon in 9th House (Rules 8th, Almuten 5th and 6th) [2a34]

There is a need for balance and compromise (Opposition) CAUSED BY his core wound (Chiron) COMING FROM his early education, childhood, communication, personal spirituality, and daily habits (Chiron in 3rd House) and AFFECTING his beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon in 9th House). This could cause him to feel unsafe (Moon) particularly WITH his shared resources (8th House), personal creativity (5th House) and his job (6th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Hubbard’s Chiron wound opposing his Moon simply reinforces all of the patterns we’ve addressed so far. The potential of Chiron in Pisces in the 3rd house is to confront a deeply wounded sense of spirituality, and as a result, experience a profound healing and transformation. Had Hubbard been able to master his “little s” self and move into integrity, he may well have become a true spiritual teacher.

Venus in Aries in the 4th House
Venus Rules 5th, 6th, 10th Houses

In order to feel validated (Venus), he needs to be assertive, inspiring, headstrong, and overconfident (Aries), WITH his personal creativity, self-expression, and tolerance for risk (Rules 5th house), his job (Rules 6th house), and his career and life path (Rules 10th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his home and family environment (Venus in 4th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Venus in Aries gives Hubbard a Fire Validation Checklist, and indeed, Venus in Aries is the only planet in Fire in his chart. Feeling loved and appreciated depends on his ability to take action and express his individuality, and being able to follow his own impulses matters far more than taking other people’s needs or desires into consideration. Unfortunately for Hubbard, Venus in Aries shares the same traps of egotism, narcissism, and self-aggrandizement that show up as potential pitfalls elsewhere in his chart.

Little is known (or at least little is verifiable) about Hubbard’s relationship with his father, save that his father was in the Navy, and absent from Hubbard’s life for much of his childhood (Hubbard was raised by his aunt). With Venus in the 4th house, however, it’s reasonable to suggest that Hubbard was driven by the need to gain the love and approval of his father, and that he would seek this approval through his creativity and adventurousness (5th house), his job (6th house), and his career and public life (10th house). Hubbard did follow his father’s lead and pursued a career in the Navy, although there’s a vast difference between the official reports of his dismal naval career and Hubbard’s claims of being “highly decorated” as an officer.

It’s worth considering some apparent contradictions in Hubbard’s chart. With Venus in Aries as the only planet in Fire in his chart, it appears unlikely that Hubbard would be particularly athletic, and yet various accounts of Hubbard’s early life suggest that he was a courageous adventurer. Too many of these claims have proved to be exaggerated, and it’s more likely that they’re the product of Hubbard’s fantasies. What all of these stories have in common, however, is that they feed Hubbard’s ego, setting him up so that he can be validated and admired.

Board of Directors for Venus

06 Hubbard Venus

We’ll look at the blueprint sentences for the board members, and then explore the dynamic of the Board of Directors as a whole.

Mars in Capricorn in the 2nd House [5 Votes, Rulership]
Mars rules 4th, 11th, 12th, Almuten 2nd

He wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors) FOR his ability to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is practical, ambitious, ruthless, and demanding (Capricorn), WITH his home and family (Rules 4th), his hopes and aspirations (Rules 11th), his unconscious and shadow self (Rules 12th), and his money and resources (Almuten 2nd). He encounters these needs particularly IN his finances and resources (Mars in 2nd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Sun in Pisces in the 3rd House [5 Votes, Exaltation and Face]
Sun Rules 9th House, Almuten 4th

He wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors) FOR his ability to express his authentic “Big S” Self and align with his Personal Standards of Integrity (Sun) in a manner that is artistic, spiritual, secretive, and dreamy (Pisces) WITH his beliefs, philosophies, religion, and higher education (rules 9th house), and his home and family (almuten 4th house). Jupiter in Scorpio in the 11th House [3 Votes, Triplicity]

He encounters these needs particularly IN his hopes and aspirations, and his relationships with friends (Jupiter in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Mercury in Pisces in the 3rd House [2 Votes, Term]
Mercury Rules 7th House

He wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors), FOR his ability to communicate and understand (Mercury) in a manner that is intuitive, artistic, nebulous, and scattered (Pisces) WITH his marriage, partnerships, and relationships with other individuals (Rules 7th house). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Mercury in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Summary of Venus in Aries’ Board of Directors

Once again, we have a situation where Mars in Capricorn has absolute control. Mars rules Jupiter in Scorpio, which in turn rules the Sun and Mercury in Pisces. Mars also has absolute control over the Boards of Directors for Hubbard’s Sun, Jupiter, and Mercury. There’s no escaping Hubbard’s ego, or the likelihood that he would go to great lengths to feed and flatter it. While this is by no means a common expression of Venus in Aries, given all of the factors at play, and, of course, biased by Hubbard’s actual life choices, it’s hard to imagine him thinking of other people as independent, equal individuals.

Fortunately, most people who struggle with the ego traps of Venus in Aries eventually learn that the world does not revolve around them and they can’t always get what they want. They learn to tame the ego, and align with the “Big S” Self. But in Hubbard’s case, his arrogance and his sheer force of imagination and belief created a “little r” reality filled with sycophants and acolytes who were always ready to cater to his every whim.

Neptune in the 8th House Square Venus in 4th House (Rules 5th, 6th, 10th Houses) [1a54]

Friction, tension, stress and conflict (Square) are CAUSED BY dissolving boundaries, fantasy, glamour and illusion (Neptune) COMING FROM shared resources and other people’s values and opinions (Neptune in 8th house) and AFFECTING his home and family (Venus in 4th House). This could cause him to feel invalidated (Venus) particularly WITH his personal creativity (5th House), his job (6th House), and his career and life path (10th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Venus square Neptune can be a challenging aspect. In romantic relationships, it is often linked to patterns of deception and betrayal. Neptune’s influence can glamorize and romanticize our partners, showing us what we want to see, and hiding what’s really there. Eventually we have to face reality, although many will prolong the fantasy with self-delusion until the bitter end. In Hubbard’s case, because Neptune is in the 8th house of other people’s values and opinions, this will be the source of the deception and betrayal. Hubbard is heavily invested in being perceived (and validated) for a false persona, and invested tremendous time and resources in an attempt to manipulate public opinion of himself. Case in point, the “authorized” biography put forth by the Church of Scientology is wildly exaggerated (to say the least), while the Church actively attempts to suppress any “unauthorized” information about Hubbard.

Chiron in the 3rd House Semi-Square Venus in 4th House (Rules 5th, 6th, 10th Houses) [1a42]

There is a minor internal tension or friction (Semi-Square) CAUSED BY his core wound (Chiron) COMING FROM his early education, childhood, communication, personal spirituality, and daily habits (Chiron in 3rd House) and AFFECTING his home and family (Venus in 4th House). This could cause him to feel invalidated (Venus) particularly WITH his personal creativity (5th House), his job (6th House), and his career and life path (10th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

This is a minor aspect. It doesn’t interfere with Hubbard’s ability to meet his Validation Needs, but it does suggest that a lack of love and appreciation in his childhood may motivate his pursuit of approval and success in later life.

Summary of Relationship Needs: Connection between Moon and Venus

Moon in Virgo Sesquiquadrate Venus in Aries [0a41]

Hubbard’s Moon and Venus are in a very tight, applying Sesquiquadrate (135°) aspect. Sesquiquadrates, like squares, suggest tension, friction, and conflict that can lead to action; however, as an 8th harmonic aspect, it tends to play out on the mental plane, rather than on the physical plane. This aspect presents a minor challenge, because deposits in his Safety Need account may trigger small withdrawals from his Validation Need account, and vice versa. This is a far less serious challenge than if the Moon and Venus were actually quincunx each other, an aspect that makes it exceptionally difficult to meet both needs at the same time.

From everything that we’ve explored so far, it seems likely that Hubbard relied on meeting his Validation Needs to make up for a fundamental, ongoing lack of safety. Whenever he felt unsafe, he would retreat further into his fantasy world, where he would soothe and feed his ego by fabricating tales of his incredible accomplishments. The bigger the ego gets, the more vulnerable it becomes, and the less Safe he feels, resulting in a vicious circle.

It’s no wonder that Hubbard and the Church of Scientology were such vocal opponents of psychology and psychiatry. By any accepted standards of mental health, Hubbard would certainly have been diagnosed with severe mental illness.
