An astrological portrait of Pope Francis I

The complete chart interpretation covers four main sections: Personality, Relationship Needs, Relationship Wants and the Marriage Blueprint, and Career. This is a "classic" example of an astrological portrait, first published in December 2013.

Each section of the interpretation begins with the completed  “Blueprint Sentence” used as the basis for that portion of the interpretation. These fill-in-the-blank blueprint template sentences are one of the exclusive tools available as part of the curriculum of the Online Natal Astrology Class. The value of these templates is that they ensure the correct relationship between the different parts of speech in the language of astrology. Simply by dropping in the appropriate keywords for signs, elements, modalities and houses, you create an astrologically-sound blueprint that you can use to build a more detailed interpretation of that specific astrological signature.

Part 1: Personality

Elements and Modalities

01 PF ElementsModalities

Pope Francis has three planets in Air (Moon, Venus, and Mars), two planets in Earth (Mercury and Jupiter), and one planet each in Fire (Sun) and Water (Saturn). This would seem to suggest that his temperament is primarily objective (Air) and practical (Earth). Fire and Water are the elements associated with strong emotions, and having only one planet in these elements suggests that Pope Francis is most strongly motivated by reason, logic, and practical considerations.

He has an even balance in terms of modalities, with three planets in Cardinal, two in Fixed, and two in Mutable, so there’s not much information here.

Sun in Sagittarius in the 6th House
Sun Rules 2nd House

Pope Francis seeks to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun) by being passionate, independent, honorable and dynamic (Sagittarius) WITH his money, resources, and talents (Sun rules 2nd House). He encounters these needs particularly IN his job and workplace relationships (Sun in 6th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Pope Francis’ Sun in Sagittarius is the only planet in Fire in his chart, and even here, the passion and drive of Sagittarius is primarily directed to more tangible, practical matters such as his money and resources (Sun rules 2nd House) and his job (Sun in 6th House). He encounters his authentic “Big S” Self in his 6th house pursuits, and while the 6th house generally means one’s “job,” it’s also a house that’s related to service and servitude, a meaning that seems rather appropriate given his life path. The Sun in Sagittarius needs freedom, and the ability to pursue its own path to a higher Truth, and Pope Francis particularly needs this in his financial matters. One possible interpretation could be that he values truth and freedom, and may, in fact, not be motivated by money and resources alone. He certainly would never take a job (6th house) just for the money (2nd house); his main priority would be the freedom to find the higher truth (Sagittarius) of his authentic Self (Sun).

Board of Directors for Sun

02 PF Sun

Jupiter in Capricorn in the 6th House [8 Votes]
Jupiter Rules 6th, 9th, Almuten 1st

In order to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), he needs to grow, expand, and experience faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is organized, Spartan, practical, and restrained (Capricorn), WITH his job (Rules 6th), his beliefs, philosophies, and higher education (Rules 9th), and his personality and self-image (Almuten 1st). He encounters these needs particularly IN his job and workplace relationships (Jupiter in 6th). [Blueprint Sentence]

It’s hardly surprising that Jupiter, the planet of faith, has such influence over Pope Francis’ Sun — and it’s equally appropriate that Jupiter rules the 6th house of service, the 9th house of religion, belief, and philosophy, and is the almuten of his 1st house, his personality and sense of self. What’s notable is that Pope Francis’ Jupiter is in Capricorn, which puts a very specific spin on how (and in what) he has faith.

Not only is Capricorn a Cardinal Earth sign, which means that planets in Capricorn become inherently practical, grounded, and motivated to take action in the physical world, but Jupiter in Capricorn is in Fall, which also suggests that Jupiter is operating on the physical and material plane at least as much as it operates on the higher spiritual planes. At lower levels of consciousness, Jupiter in Capricorn can represent significant issues with material lack and an unhealthy attachment to money and property. As Pope Francis has demonstrated, however, at higher levels of consciousness, this energy can manifest as an eschewing of material excess, and a commitment to supporting the poor and to addressing the economic forces that have created such poverty and inequality around the world.

Mars in Libra in the 3rd House [2 Votes]
Mars Rules 4th, 5th, Almuten 7th

In order to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), he needs to take action and expend energy in a manner that is agreeable, dispassionate, strategic, and sophisticated (Libra), WITH his home and family (Mars Rules 4th), his personal creativity and tolerance for risk (Mars Rules 5th), and his one-to-one relationships (Mars Almuten 7th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, personal spirituality, and familiar environment (Mars in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

The only other planet with any influence over Pope Francis’ Sun is Mars in Libra, with 2 votes (Saturn in Pisces only has one vote for Face, and is ruled by Jupiter, so it’s influence over the Sun is negligible at best). Mars doesn’t have enough influence to push its agenda here, but Libra, like Capricorn, is a Cardinal Sign, and Mars in Libra will always support Jupiter in Capricorn’s desire to take action.

Where Mars in Libra really shows up is on the Board of Directors for Pope Francis’ Mercury in Capricorn. We can see the diplomatic skills of Mars in Libra expressing through Pope Francis’ communication, and especially through his history of negotiation and building bridges between groups of different faiths, values, and beliefs.

Aspects to the Sun

Pluto in the 1st House Quincunx Sun in the 6th House (Rules 2nd House) [2a22]

There is a random, unexpected disruption (Quincunx) caused by issues of power, control and manipulation (Pluto) COMING FROM his personality and self-image (Pluto in 1st House) and affecting his job, workplace environment, and relationships with coworkers (Sun in 6th House). This could interfere with his ability to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun), particularly WITH his money and resources (Sun rules 2nd house). [Blueprint Sentence]

With Pluto in his 1st house quincunx his Sun in the 6th house, Pope Francis will tend to shake things up and be an agent of disruption and transformation, particularly in his job and workplace environments — although because this is a quincunx, there will rarely be any obvious connection between Pope Francis and the shifts in power. It appears to be a mere coincidence that he’s always around during times of profound change and upheaval, but it’s difficult to point to him as the catalyst. On a personal level, this aspect, even more than his Jupiter in Capricorn, may be the root of his noted austerity, because the Pluto disruptions specifically affect his money and resources. One way of dealing with this could be to adopt the belief that “the less you have, the less you have to lose.”

Chiron in the 12th House Opposite Sun in the 6th House (Rules 2nd House) [5s39]

There is a need for balance and compromise (Opposition) caused by his core wound (Chiron) COMING FROM his unconscious and shadow self (Chiron in 12th) and affecting his job, workplace environment, and relationships with coworkers (Sun in 6th House). This could interfere with his ability to express his authentic “Big S” Self (Sun), particularly WITH his money and resources (Sun rules 2nd house). [Blueprint Sentence]

The Chiron wound, coming from his unconscious (and his tendency to self-sabotage) in the 12th house, also impacts Pope Francis’ Sun, his workplace, and especially his relationship with money. This certainly contributes to his personal austerity, although it also suggests that behavior such as his refusal to live in the papal palace, and choice to live in the modest gatehouse instead, could carry the potential of self-sabotage.

Ascendant in Cancer

When he interacts with the world and other individuals, he appears to be affectionate, deep, understanding and traditional (Cancer). Although Cancer is a Cardinal Water sign, and operates on the emotional plane, Pope Francis avoids many of the traps of personal involvement and emotional investment that we might expect from a Cancer Ascendant, because the Board of Directors for his Ascendant is filled with planets that are extremely objective.

Ascendant’s Board of Directors

03 PF Ascendant

Moon in Aquarius in the 8th House [5 Votes]
Moon Rules 1st, Almuten 10th, 11th

Other people perceive (Ascendant) his need to express feelings and emotions (Moon) in a manner that is abstract, rebellious, humanitarian, and eccentric (Aquarius), WITH his personality and self-image (Moon rules 1st), his career and public image (Moon Almuten 10th), and his personal ambitions (Moon Almuten 11th). [Blueprint Sentence]

We’ll explore the Moon in detail in the next section. For now, it’s enough to note that the Moon in Aquarius is notable for its gift for abstract, impersonal compassion. It’s happiest caring about big issues that affect large groups of individuals, but it’s generally uncomfortable when faced with the concerns of a single individual.

Jupiter in Capricorn in the 6th House [6 Votes]
Jupiter Rules 6th, 9th, Almuten 1st

Other people perceive (Ascendant) his need to grow, expand, and experience faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is ambitious, mature, and relentless (Capricorn), WITH his job (Jupiter Rules 6th), his beliefs and philosophies (Jupiter Rules 9th), and his self-image (Jupiter Almuten 1st). [Blueprint Sentence]

Although the Moon in Aquarius rules his Cancer Ascendant, Jupiter in Capricorn has the most influence, with a total of 6 votes on the Board of Directors. The practical faith that is the fundamental motivation for Pope Francis’ authentic Self is also evident in how he engages with the world.

Mars in Libra in the 3rd House [3 Votes]
Mars Rules 4th, 5th, Almuten 7th

Other people perceive (Ascendant) his need to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is indifferent, mediating, and analytical (Libra), WITH his home and family (Mars Rules 4th), his personal creativity (Mars Rules 5th), and his one-to-one relationships (Mars Almuten 7th). [Blueprint Sentence]

Although Mars in Libra has only 3 votes on the Board of Directors for his Ascendant, it suggests that Pope Francis’ willingness to negotiate and to build bridges is evident in his personality.

Part of Fortune in Taurus in the 11th House

04 PF POF

He will experience the greatest amount of prosperity and success (Part of Fortune) by being enduring, faithful, artistic, and strong-willed (Taurus), particularly IN his personal ambitions and his friendships (Part of Fortune in 11th House). [Blueprint Sentence].

At first glance, it seems ironic that Pope Francis’ Part of Fortune is in the sensual, material, luxury-loving sign of Taurus, in the 11th house of personal ambition. But once again, the Board of Directors tells the rest of the story. The board members of the Part of Fortune in Taurus are Venus in Aquarius with 5 votes, and the Moon in Aquarius with 7 votes, both ruled by Saturn in Pisces with 3 votes. Once again, we see the same themes of objectivity, compassion for humanity, and the Aquarian need to put the integrity of the group above the needs of any individuals — and all of this tempered by another dose of practical compassion, with Saturn in Pisces.

Summary of Pope Francis’s Personality

It’s notable how much of Pope Francis’ personality relates directly to the mutual reception between Jupiter in Capricorn and Saturn in Pisces. One way to summarize this energy is “practical compassion,” and that seems to be an apt description of Pope Francis’ approach to life, and to his responsibilities as a world spiritual leader.

Although his Sun in Sagittarius and Ascendant in Cancer are quincunx by sign, his Jupiter in Capricorn is the almuten of both, which suggests an inherent consistency between how he appears to the world, and who he truly is as an individual.

Part 2: Relationship Needs

Moon in Aquarius in the 8th House
Moon Rules 1st, Almuten 10th, 11th

In order to feel Safe (Moon), he needs to feel altruistic, objective, progressive, and rational (Aquarius) WITH his personality and self-image (Moon rules 1st), his career and public image (Moon Almuten 10th), and his personal ambitions (Moon Almuten 11th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his experiences with shared resources and other people’s opinions (Moon in 8th House). [Blueprint Sentence].

With only one planet in Water (Saturn in Pisces), it could be suggested that Pope Francis is very drawn to emotions and feelings; however, the Moon in Aquarius tells a very different story. While he may be attracted to emotions and feelings, if they get too personal, he will begin to feel unsafe. The saying that Aquarius energy has a great love of humanity, but difficulty loving individual humans well describes the Moon in Aquarius.

Aquarius energy always operates on the level of the group, not of the individual. It’s interesting to consider that Pope Francis is particularly concerned with being objective and serving the greater good of the group in his self-image and personality (Moon rules 1st), and also in his career and public life (Moon almuten 10th), and his friendships, and personal ambitions (Moon almuten 11th). This altruistic need to put his personal feelings aside in the name of greater freedom for humanity shows up, interestingly enough, in his 8th house of shared resources. One can presume that the Moon in Aquarius in the 8th house tends to take a somewhat radical view towards the distribution of resources, one that favors a very high level of equality.

Board of Directors for the Moon

05 PF Moon

Although the Board of Directors for Pope Francis’ Moon seems to consist of three planets, Saturn in Pisces with 5 votes, Mercury in Capricorn with 4 votes, and Venus in Aquarius with 2 votes, in fact, the Board belongs entirely to Saturn in Pisces, because both Venus and Mercury report directly to Saturn.

Saturn in Pisces in the 8th House [5 Votes]
Saturn Rules 7th, 8th

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), he needs to experience boundaries, structure, limitations, and responsibility (Saturn) in a manner that is benevolent, nebulous, mysterious, and unselfish (Pisces), WITH his one-to-one relationships (Saturn Rules 7th), and his shared resources (Saturn Rules 8th). He encounters these needs particularly IN other people’s money, values, and opinions (Saturn in 8th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Pope Francis’ Saturn in Pisces is in mutual reception with his Jupiter in Capricorn. The influence of Jupiter in Capricorn was prominent in his personality, and the influence of Saturn in Pisces is dominant in his Safety and Validation Needs. Saturn is always concerned with the Law; but Saturn in Pisces is more concerned with spiritual Law than with any material or man-made laws. In many cases, this can make Saturn in Pisces a challenge to experience, because it’s still important to be able to recognize and respect the more tangible, form-based rules and boundaries. This is where the mutual reception with Jupiter in Capricorn comes in handy: Jupiter in Capricorn forces Saturn in Pisces to operate on a tangible, material, structured, form-based level.

What this may mean is that in order to feel Safe, Pope Francis must truly live the spiritual values and Laws that he teaches and represents. His personal austerity might also be an expression of his Saturn in Pisces (via Jupiter in Capricorn) need to “walk his talk,” as it were.

Mercury in Capricorn in the 7th House [4 Votes]
Mercury Rules 3rd, 12th, Almuten 8th

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), he needs to communicate and understand (Mercury) in a manner that is authoritative, practical, determined, and responsible (Capricorn), WITH his writing, communication, and personal spirituality (Rules 3rd), his shadow-self and personal unconscious (Rules 12th), and with shared resources and other people’s values and opinions (Almuten 8th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his one-to-one relationships (Mercury in 7th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Again we encounter an unusual contradiction with Pope Francis. Because the Moon is in an Air sign, words are essential to meeting his Safety Needs, something that is reinforced by Mercury having 4 votes on the Moon’s Board of Directors. And yet, Mercury is in Capricorn, which suggests that words will not be quite sufficient to meet Pope Francis’ Safety Needs. Mercury in Capricorn needs to put ideas into tangible, concrete, manifest action. Again, this suggests that “talking the talk” isn’t good enough; you must also “walk the walk.”

Venus in Aquarius in the 7th House [2 Votes]
Venus Rules 10th, 11th

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), he needs to align with his Core Values and experience love and appreciation (Venus) in a manner that is selfless, loyal, humanistic, and egalitarian (Aquarius), WITH his career and life path (10th) and his personal ambitions and friendships (11th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his one-to-one relationships (Venus in 7th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Venus has only 2 votes on the Moon’s Board of Directors. This suggests a connection between his Safety and Validation Needs, but little else. Venus reports directly to Saturn in Pisces, so Venus has virtually no independent influence on the Moon’s Board of Directors. We’ll wait to explore Venus in Aquarius until we consider Pope Francis’ Validation Needs in their own right.

Aspects to the Moon

Chiron in the 12th House Trine Moon in the 8th House (Moon Rules 1st, Almuten 10th, 11th) [7a41]

There is a constant flow of energy (Trine) caused by his core wound (Chiron) COMING FROM his unconscious and shadow self (Chiron in 12th house) and affecting his shared resources (Moon in 8th House). This could cause him to feel unsafe (Moon), particularly WITH his personality and sense of self (Moon Rules 1st House), his career (Moon Almuten 10th house), and his personal aspirations and friendships (Moon Almuten 11th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

The trine from Chiron to the Moon does not represent a significant challenge to feeling Safe. Because Chiron is in the 12th house, Pope Francis is largely unconscious of the nature of his Chiron in Gemini core wound, which is concerned with uniting opposites. This aspect probably increases Pope Francis’ sensitivity to the social and economic inequality in the world, and fuels his personal quest to resolve these issues.

Venus in Aquarius in the 7th House
Venus Rules 10th, 11th

In order to feel validated (Venus), he needs to be inventive, unique, fearless, and free-thinking (Aquarius) WITH his career and life path (10th) and his personal ambitions and friendships (11th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his one-to-one relationships (Venus in 7th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Venus in Aquarius has an Air Validation Checklist, so words are essential for Pope Francis to feel loved and appreciated. Because Venus rules his 10th house of career, it’s reasonable to consider that every time he advanced in his career and received a new title (Bishop, Cardinal, Pope) it made a significant deposit in his Validation Need Account.

The challenge with Venus in Aquarius is that others may see Pope Francis’ Core Values as eccentric, contrary, and abstract (Aquarius). He will always seek out the company of others who share his unique views, and will have great difficulty feeling appreciated or validated by people who do not see the world in the same way that he does, particularly with regards to humanitarian issues, equality, and freedom.

That his Venus is in the 7th house gives Pope Francis an interesting perspective. He is naturally aware of the values that other people hold dear. While he may not feel an easy or natural affinity with others because of the fundamental differences in value systems, his ability to see what’s important to others is a valuable asset that serves him well in his negotiations and diplomacy.

Pope Francis’ Venus in Aquarius only has dignity by Face, which does suggest an underlying fear about being able to meet his Validation Needs. One way this could manifest is as an underlying fear that there aren’t any other people who, in fact, share his core values. Planets in Aquarius need to associate with a group, and with Venus in Face, Pope Francis may fear that his values may always make him an outsider.

Board of Directors for Venus

06 PF Venus

Saturn in Pisces in the 8th House [5 Votes]
Saturn Rules 7th, 8th

Mercury in Capricorn in the 7th House [5 Votes]
Mercury Rules 3rd, 12th, Almuten 8th

Venus in Aquarius in the 7th House [1 Vote]
Venus Rules 10th, 11th

The Board of Directors for Venus in Aquarius is virtually identical to that of the Moon in Aquarius, except that Mercury has 5 votes instead of 4, and Venus has only 1 Vote for Face.

Aspects to Venus

Uranus in the 10th House Square Venus in the 7th House (Venus rules 10th, 11th) [1s40]

There is friction, tension, stress and conflict (Square) caused by unexpected disruptions, and issues of rejection and abandonment (Uranus) COMING FROM his career and public life (Uranus in 10th house) and affecting his one-to-one relationships (Venus in 7th House). This could cause him to feel invalidated, particularly WITH his career and public life (Venus rules 10th), and his personal ambitions and friendships (Venus rules 11th). [Blueprint Sentence]

One way this aspect could play out is with the story that the higher Pope Francis advances in his professional and public life, the less support, validation, and appreciation he receives from other individuals, and the more isolated he becomes.

Summary of Relationship Needs: Connection between Moon and Venus

Moon Conjunct Venus [4s56]

Both Pope Francis’ Moon and Venus are in Aquarius. Not only does he have both an Air Safety Checklist and an Air Validation Checklist, but because the Moon and Venus are widely conjunct, they’re virtually the same. Words and ideas are absolutely essential to meeting his relationship needs. However, as noted several times before, because both the Moon and Venus report to Saturn in Pisces, Pope Francis isn’t automatically averse to feelings and emotions (as is sometimes the case with Air Safety and Validation checklists).

His Safety and Validation Needs are even more connected because while Venus rules the 10th and 11th houses, the Moon is the almuten of these houses.

Part 3: Relationship Wants

Descendant in Capricorn / Vertex in Aquarius

With his Descendent in Capricorn, Pope Francis is consciously attracted to partners who are ambitious, mature, serious, and traditional. With his Vertex in Aquarius, however, he is unconsciously drawn to partners who are avant-garde, brave, progressive, and questioning.

Since both his Moon and Venus are also in Aquarius, the Vertex in Aquarius partners will automatically meet his Safety and Validation Needs; however, because of the common rulership by Saturn in Pisces (and the significant Mercury in Capricorn influence on the Board of Directors for his Moon and Venus), Descendant in Capricorn partners also have a reasonable chance of meeting his Safety and Validation Needs.

Obviously, the question of the Pope’s love affairs or marriage partner(s) is somewhat moot. We’ll have to take a broad, and largely hypothetical approach to this part of the interpretation.

5th House: Love Affairs (and Social Advancement)
Mars in Libra in the 3rd House (Mars Rules 4th, 5th, Almuten 7th)

07 PF 5th

Pope Francis I looks for casual romantic partners (5th house) who align with his need to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is objective, balanced, collaborative, and friendly (Libra), WITH his home and family (Mars Rules 4th), his personal creativity and tolerance for risk (Mars Rules 5th), and his one-to-one relationships (Mars Almuten 7th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his writing, communication, personal spirituality, and familiar environment (Mars in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Taking this any further exploring the question of the Pope’s romantic partners is just wildly inappropriate, so I’m going to change the context and explore the 5th house from a traditional (although rarely considered) context of how one goes about seeking social advancement. After all, you don’t get elected Pope without some serious networking skills, not to mention some powerful supporters.

With Mars in Libra in charge of his 5th house, Pope Francis naturally takes strategic, balanced (Libra) action (Mars). He will look for support from his country (Mars rules 4th), and also seek advancement through strategic partnerships with other individuals (Mars almuten 7th). And the way that he will build these partnerships and coalitions is through his ideas, his writing, and his communication. And since the 3rd house represents one’s familiar environment, it’s likely that he will focus on local, grass-roots efforts to gain support.

7th House: Marriage (and Partnerships)
Saturn in Pisces in the 8th House (Saturn Rules 7th, 8th)

08 PF 7th

Pope Francis’ marriage and relationships with other individuals (7th house) involve being able to establish boundaries, limits, and structure, and accept responsibility (Saturn) in a manner that is adaptable, loving, merciful, and vulnerable (Pisces), WITH his one-to-one relationships (Saturn Rules 7th), and his shared resources (Saturn Rules 8th). He encounters these needs particularly IN other people’s money, values, and opinions (Saturn in 8th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

The foundation for any partnership with Pope Francis is a respect for Spiritual Law, and a willingness to respect (and when needed, enforce) boundaries, albeit always with great compassion. Because Saturn both rules and occupies the 8th house, issues of stewardship of shared resources are also very important. Money, finances, and the responsible management of resources is likely to be the primary area of concern for his 7th house relationships, and while the ongoing partnerships and other 7th house alliances he forms may grow into personal relationships, they may frequently begin as financial negotiations, budgetary concerns, and economic planning.

11th House: Friendships
Venus in Aquarius in the 7th House (Venus Rules 10th, 11th)

09 PF 11th

Pope Francis I is likely to become friends (11th house) with people who align with his need to experience beauty, and align with his Core Values (Venus) in a manner that is idealistic, articulate, and loyal (Aquarius), WITH his career and life path (10th) and his personal ambitions and friendships (11th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his one-to-one relationships (Venus in 7th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

The fact that Venus in Aquarius, the ruler of the 11th house of friendships, is in the 7th house of partnerships, suggests that Pope Francis may tend to build personal friendships with the individuals with whom he negotiates (and occasionally battles) in the 7th house. The deciding factor, however, will always be a shared set of values. If you’re not a member of the group that Venus in Aquarius identifies with, you’ll never move from the 7th to the 11th house with Pope Francis.

Connections Between 5th, 7th and 11th Houses

Mars, the ruler of the 5th house is also the Almuten of the 7th house, suggesting that Pope Francis is able to create lasting enduring partnerships (7th house) with his patrons and supporters (5th house). Saturn, the ruler of the 7th house, also rules Venus in Aquarius, the ruler of his 11th house, which suggests the potential for a personal friendship to grow out of a professional partnership. And Mercury in Capricorn (ruled by Saturn in Pisces) is on the Board of Directors for Mars, Saturn, and Venus, suggesting even more common ground, based on clear, practical, no-nonsense (Capricorn) communication (Mercury).

Marriage Blueprint

Again, the actual Marriage Blueprint isn’t a factor for Pope Francis, but we can still take a snapshot of his experience of his parents.

10 PF Parents

Father: Mars in Libra in the 3rd House (Mars Rules 4th, 5th)

Mars in Libra is both in Detriment and peregrine, suggesting that Pope Francis’ father seemed both worried (Detriment) and powerless (peregrine). His father was an Italian immigrant, who fled Italy in the wake of rising fascism. Because Mars in Libra is in the 3rd house, we might gather that his father was very influential in Pope Francis’ early education.

Mother: Venus in Aquarius in the 7th House (Venus Rules 10th, 11th)

Venus in Aquarius has dignity only by Face, and on some level, Pope Francis may have experienced his mother as being afraid (Face). His mother may also have shaped some of his Aquarian, unconventional Core Values.

Part 4: Career

To consider Pope Francis’ career, we’ll look at the 10th house (Career), 6th house (Job) and 2nd house (Money).

10th House: Career

Venus in Aquarius in the 7th House
Venus Rules 10th, 11th Houses

11 PF 10th

Pope Francis’ career and life path (10th house) involve experiencing beauty and aligning with his Core Values (Venus) in a manner that is gregarious, logical, democratic, and humanistic (Aquarius), WITH his career and life path (10th) and his personal ambitions and friendships (11th). He encounters these needs particularly IN his one-to-one relationships (Venus in 7th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

We’ve already explored Venus and the planets on Venus’ Board of Directors in detail (Saturn in Pisces, 5 votes; Mercury in Capricorn, 5 votes; Venus in Aquarius, 1 vote), so we won’t repeat that here. It’s enough to note that in the context of his career, what matters the most are Saturn in Pisces’ need for compassionate, spiritual boundaries and respect for Spiritual Law, and Mercury in Capricorn’s need for frank, practical, direct communication that addresses real-world issues.

6th House: Job

12 PF 6th

Jupiter in Capricorn in the 6th House
Jupiter Rules 6th, 9th, Almuten 1st

Pope Francis’ job (6th house) involves growing and expanding, and experiencing faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is structured, enterprising, and conservative (Capricorn), WITH his job (Rules 6th), his beliefs, philosophies, and higher education (Rules 9th), and his personality and self-image (Almuten 1st). He encounters these needs particularly IN his job and workplace relationships (Jupiter in 6th). [Blueprint Sentence]

We explored Jupiter in Capricorn in detail when looking at the Board of Directors for the Sun, so I’ll simply reiterate the very physical (Jupiter in Fall), practical, material, tangible (Capricorn/Earth) approach that extends to his 6th house job and service, his 9th house beliefs, philosophy, and religion, and his 1st house self-image. Good works mean far more to Pope Francis than fine words; he has no use for faith that doesn’t have a tangible effect on the material world.

6th House Ruler (Jupiter in Capricorn) Board of Directors

As we’ve already explored each of the board members for Jupiter in Capricorn in detail, I’ll simply list the Board of Directors, and then provide a summary.

Saturn in Pisces in the 8th House [5 Votes]
Saturn Rules 7th, 8th

Mars in Libra in the 3rd House [4 Votes]
Mars Rules 4th, 5th, Almuten 7th

Moon in Aquarius in the 8th House [3 Votes]
Moon Rules 1st, Almuten 10th, 11th

Venus in Aquarius in the 7th House [2 Votes]
Venus Rules 10th, 11th

Saturn in Pisces has the greatest influence over Pope Francis’ 6th house (Jupiter in Capricorn); not only does Saturn have 5 votes for rulership, but both the Moon in Aquarius (3 votes) and Venus in Aquarius (2 votes) are ruled by Saturn, so the Moon and Venus will always vote with Saturn. Not to mention that Saturn is the co-almuten of Mars in Libra (ruled by Venus in Aquarius, who will tell Mars to vote with Saturn). So it’s all Saturn’s. Everything about the 6th house is concerned with service to spiritual Law (Saturn in Pisces), and Jupiter in Capricorn seeks a practical, tangible way to embody that.

2nd House: Money

13 PF 2nd

Sun in Sagittarius in the 6th House
Sun Rules 2nd House

The way that Pope Francis I (earns money (2nd house) involves aligning with his Personal Standards of Integrity and expressing his authentic, “Big S” Self (Sun) in a manner that is adventurous, independent, philosophical, and unrestrained (Sagittarius), WITH his money, resources, and talents (Sun rules 2nd House). He encounters these needs particularly IN his job and workplace relationships (Sun in 6th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

That the Sun in the 6th house rules the 2nd house suggests that the source of Pope Francis’ money and resources is the service (6th) that he performs as a unique individual (Sun).

2nd House Ruler (Sun in Sagittarius) Board of Directors

Again, we’ve explored the Board of Directors for the Sun in detail in Part 1, so I’ll simply list the board members, and provide a summary of how they influence the affairs of the 2nd house.

Jupiter in Capricorn in the 6th House [8 Votes]

As with almost everything else in Pope Francis’ chart, the Board of Directors for the Sun comes back to the mutual reception between Jupiter and Saturn. Jupiter in Capricorn has the vast majority of the votes on the Sun’s Board of Directors, but it reports to Saturn in Pisces. While Saturn only has 1 vote on the Board of Directors, it still has influence over Jupiter in Capricorn. The emphasis, of course, is on practical spirituality, and applying spiritual Law to real-life, tangible situations. This is how Pope Francis will build (and manage) his finances and resources.

Connections Between Career Houses

There are very strong connections between the 2nd house and the 6th house — the ruler of the 2nd is in the 6th house, and the ruler of the ruler of the 2nd house is the ruler of the 6th house. The connections between the 6th and 10th houses are subtler: both Jupiter in Capricorn and Venus in Aquarius are ruled by Saturn in Pisces. And there’s no connection between the 2nd and 10th houses.

It seems that Pope Francis will earn his money and resources through his 6th house affairs, his job, and the way that he acts in service to others. His 10th house advancements are closely connected to his 6th house job, but they don’t connect to his finances. And with his Sun in the 6th house, Pope Francis quite literally lives for the day-to-day service, and is less concerned about the public acclaim that comes from his significant 10th house promotion.

Summary

It’s quite fascinating to explore Pope Francis’ chart, because his high level of consciousness provide such concrete examples of the potential expression of apparently challenging astrological signatures. At lower levels of consciousness, the Jupiter in Capricorn mutual reception with Saturn in Pisces could be exceptionally challenging. While Pope Francis seems to be embodying the core lesson of practical spirituality, this is quite an impressive feat. Many people would not be able to integrate the opposing energies, and would either place all of their faith in the material world (with unsatisfying results, because they would lack the understanding of the Spiritual Laws that govern matter and form), or denounce the material world in pursuit of some far-off spiritual ideal.

Pope Francis, however, has found a middle path. While his frugality made headlines, and his choices to adopt a far more modest standard of living (and dress) than his predecessors caused a great deal of comment, it’s clear from his commitment to addressing the real-world problems of poverty and economic disparity that he is acting from a place of deep, personal integrity.

The question of faith is present in every part of Pope Francis’ chart, because either Jupiter in Capricorn or Saturn in Pisces has significant influence over every single planet. It’s clear that Pope Francis has found his answer, and his faith, and by doing so, has moved into Right Relationship with each of the Astrological Archetypes.
