An astrological portrait of Margaret Thatcher.

The complete chart interpretation covers four main sections: Personality, Relationship Needs, Relationship Wants and the Marriage Blueprint, and Career. This is a "classic" example of an astrological portrait, first published in November 2013.

Each section of the interpretation begins with the completed  “Blueprint Sentence” used as the basis for that portion of the interpretation. These fill-in-the-blank blueprint template sentences are one of the exclusive tools available as part of the curriculum of the Online Natal Astrology Class. The value of these templates is that they ensure the correct relationship between the different parts of speech in the language of astrology. Simply by dropping in the appropriate keywords for signs, elements, modalities and houses, you create an astrologically-sound blueprint that you can use to build a more detailed interpretation of that specific astrological signature.

Part 1: Personality

Elements and Modalities

01 Thatcher Elements

Thatcher has three planets in Air (Sun, Mercury and Mars in Libra) and two planets in Fire (Moon in Leo, Venus in Sagittarius). This is a relatively strong emphasis on the more active, extroverted and expressive elements, and it’s worth noting that the five fastest-moving planets are in these active, expressive signs. She has only one planet in Earth (Jupiter in Capricorn) and one planet in Water (Saturn in Scorpio). She also has four planets in Cardinal signs, which further emphasizes her preference for being active and initiating, and also suggests that she is strongly motivated to express her individual identity (Cardinal).

She may have a difficult time with feelings and emotions (Saturn in Scorpio is the only planet in Water), and with Jupiter in Capricorn being the only planet in Earth, she may also tend to be short-sighted (Cardinal) when it comes to practical application (Earth).

She has two planets in Fixed signs: the Moon in Leo and Saturn in Scorpio, which suggests a certain rigidity and inflexibility once she’s made a decision. The Moon in Leo can imbue her choices with ego-based attachments and a fear of being seen as wrong, and Saturn in Scorpio can take a perverse pleasure in following the rules to the letter. And with four planets in Libra, Saturn in Scorpio has far more influence over Thatcher’s chart than it appears at first glance.

Sun in Libra in the 11th House/Sun Almuten 6th House

Thatcher seeks to express her authentic “Big S” Self (Sun) by being civil, reasoning, and strategic (Libra) WITH her job and relationships with co-workers (Sun Almuten 6th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her hopes, aspirations, and friendships (Sun in 11th House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Margaret Thatcher’s fundamental personality fully embodies the Libra “iron fist in a velvet glove” qualities. The Board of Directors for any planet in Libra is extremely important because Venus, Saturn or Mercury may have the most influence. The Sun in Libra is in the sign of its Fall, and one of the challenges for individuals with the Sun in Libra is that they seek to define and express their individual identity (Cardinal) and authentic “Big S” Self (Sun) in relationships with other individuals (Libra). It’s difficult for these individuals to have a sense of “me” without also having a sense of “you.”

Thatcher’s Sun doesn’t rule any houses in her chart, so one could argue that she expresses her identity equally in every area of her life (while encountering it specifically in her personal hopes and aspirations, because the Sun is in her 11th house). Her Sun is the almuten of her 6th house, however, which suggests a slight emphasis on her job and workplace as a vehicle through which she expresses her identity. Given Thatcher’s life, it’s worth considering the “service” aspects of the 6th house as well as the “job” aspects, since she spent her professional career in public service.

Board of Directors for Sun

02 ThatcherSun

Venus in Sagittarius in the 1st House [5 Votes]
Venus Rules 7th, 12th, Almuten 4th House

In order to express her authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), she needs to express her Core Values and feel Validated (Venus) in a manner that is inspiring, tolerant, and assertive (Sagittarius), WITH her marriage and partnerships (rules 7th house), her personal unconscious and shadow-self (rules 12th house), and her home and family (almuten 4th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personality and self-image (Venus in 1st house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Although Venus in Sagittarius rules Thatcher’s Sun in Libra, it does not have the most influence on her Sun’s Board of Directors; Saturn in Scorpio has 8 votes, to Venus in Sagittarius’ 5 votes. Still, Venus in Sagittarius is the Ruler and CEO, and sets the public agenda for how her Sun in Libra will express. What Venus in Sagittarius brings to the table is inspiration and focus, and a vision of being a part of something bigger than any one individual. Venus also brings a need to be loved, appreciated and validated, which shows up strongly in her personality because Venus rules her Sun, and Venus is in her 1st house. What she most wants to be validated for is her personal expression of and pursuit of the Truth.

That Venus rules Thatcher’s 7th house emphasizes relationships as a necessary part of how she expresses her authentic “Big S” Self. And again, in light of Thatcher’s life and career, we can expand the 4th house connection to include a love of her country. That Venus also rules her 12th house indicates that Venus is the vehicle of her self-sabotage, which will show up in her 1st house as a part of her identity and personality, and, more specifically, how she expresses herself in relationship. Her need to embody and express her Venus in Sagittarius values of freedom, honesty, expansion, and her personal perception of Truth is both a fundamental part of her authentic “Big S” Self and the source of many of the challenges she will face throughout her life.

Saturn in Scorpio in the 12th House [8 Votes]
Saturn Rules 3rd, Almuten 12th House

In order to express her authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), she needs to experience responsibility, boundaries and structure (Saturn) in a manner that is determined, resourceful, and driven (Scorpio), WITH her writing, communication and familiar environment (rules 3rd) and her personal unconscious and shadow-self (almuten 12th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal unconscious (Saturn in 12th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Saturn in Scorpio has the most influence on Thatcher’s Sun’s Board of Directors, and here we find the source of the “iron fist,” as well as the source of Thatcher’s determination and resolve. With four planets in Cardinal signs (including her Sun in Libra), we would expect Thatcher to lose interest in things as soon as they become routine. The fixed energy of Saturn in Scorpio, however, underlies all of the planets in Libra in Thatcher’s chart, and this suggests that once she initiates something or gives expression to an idea, she expects the form and structure (Saturn) of that idea to endure (Fixed).

It’s interesting to note that we see another strong 12th house emphasis: Saturn is the almuten of the 12th house, which means that Saturn also carries some of the energy of unconscious self-sabotage with it, but more importantly, Saturn is also in the 12th house, which means that Thatcher is largely unconscious and unaware of her Saturn needs. It may also indicate that Thatcher is unconscious of the deep, powerful emotional attachments (Scorpio) that fuel her need for order, structure, boundaries, and authority (Saturn), although this may be obvious to others.

Mercury in Libra in the 12th House [2 Votes]
Mercury Rules 8th, 10th, 11th Houses

In order to express her authentic “Big S” Self (Sun’s Board of Directors), she needs to communicate and process information (Mercury) in a manner that is reasoning, accommodative, and detached (Libra), WITH shared resources and other people’s money (rules 8th house), her career and life path (rules 10th house), and her personal ambitions, dreams, and friendships (rules 11th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal unconscious and shadow-self (Mercury in 12th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Even though Mercury in Libra only has 2 votes on the Sun’s Board of Directors, it brings in yet another 12th house signature. Mercury in Libra has virtually the same Board of Directors as the Sun in Libra, so this 12th house signature extends to the affairs of the 8th house of shared resources, the 10th house of her career and public life, and the 11th house of her hopes and aspirations — where her Sun resides.

Aspects to the Sun

Venus in the 1st House (Rules 7th, 12th, Almuten 4th) Semi-Square Sun in Libra in the 11th House (Almuten 6th House) [2a25]
[Venus has 5 votes on Sun’s Board of Directors]

There is a minor internal tension or friction (Semi-Square) BETWEEN her Core Values and need to be Validated (Venus), specifically involving her marriage and partnerships (Venus rules 7th), her unconscious and patterns of self-sabotage (Venus rules 12th), and her home and family (Venus almuten 4th), COMING FROM her personality (Venus in 1st house), AND her need to express her authentic, “Big S” Self (Sun), specifically involving her job and workplace (Sun almuten 6th house), COMING FROM her personal aspirations and dreams (Sun in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Although the semi-square between the Sun and Venus is a minor aspect, it’s still significant because it affects both the Sun and Venus equally. Venus has 5 votes on the Sun’s Board of Directors, and the Sun has 3 votes on Venus’ Board of Directors. From the perspective of the Sun, her need to be validated and appreciated (Venus) for her individual expression of and understanding of the Truth (Sagittarius) can clash with her Personal Standards of Integrity (Sun). There’s sufficient common ground between Libra and Sagittarius that this isn’t a major issue. It most likely creates opportunities for Thatcher to stop and question her choices and confirm that she’s in integrity before taking action.

Mercury in the 12th house (Rules 8th, 10th, 11th) Conjunct Sun in Libra in the 11th House (Almuten 6th House) [4s16]
[Mercury has 2 votes on Sun’s Board of Directors]

There is a unity of purpose (Conjunction) BETWEEN her need to communicate and understand (Mercury), specifically involving her shared resources and other people’s money (rules 8th house), her career and life path (rules 10th house), and her personal ambitions, dreams, and friendships (rules 11th house), COMING FROM her personal unconscious and shadow-self (Mercury in 12th house) AND her need to express her authentic, “Big S” Self (Sun), specifically involving her job and workplace (Sun almuten 6th house), COMING FROM her personal aspirations and dreams (Sun in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

This is an interesting conjunction because it straddles the cusp of the 12th house, with the Sun in the 11th and Mercury in the 12th. This aspect is more significant for Mercury than it is for the Sun, because it means that Mercury is combust, and completely hidden by the Sun. This emphasizes the hidden, unconscious, 12th house nature of Thatcher’s Mercury in Libra. It also suggests that her Sun may be more actively involved in the affairs of the houses ruled by Mercury, the 8th, 10th, and 11th. So, if Mercury rules her 10th house/Midheaven, but it’s hidden by the Sun, we could say that Thatcher ended up being better known and recognized for her personality (Sun) than for her ideas (Mercury).

Uranus in the 4th House Quincunx Sun in the 11th house (Almuten 6th House) [2a58]

There are random, unexpected disruptions (Quincunx) caused by unexpected events (Uranus), COMING FROM her home and family environment (Uranus in 4th house) and affecting her need to express her authentic “Big S” Self (Sun) WITH her job (Sun Almuten 6th house). She experiences these IN her personal aspirations, hopes, dreams, and friendships (Sun in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

It’s interesting to view this aspect with the 4th house representing England, Thatcher’s home country. While she may have experienced unexpected challenges showing up in her personal life, certainly the various crises and upheavals in England during her political career would have had unexpected, unanticipated, and often unwelcome effects on her personal ambitions and aspirations.

Pluto in the 9th House Square Sun in the 11th house (Almuten 6th House) [4s45]

There is friction, stress, tension and conflict (Square) caused by issues of power, control and manipulation (Pluto), COMING FROM her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Pluto in 9th house) and affecting her need to express her authentic “Big S” Self (Sun) WITH her job (Sun Almuten 6th house). She experiences these IN her personal aspirations, hopes, dreams, and friendships (Sun in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

We’ll see in the next section how important the 9th house is in Thatcher’s chart, because it’s entirely the domain of her Moon in Leo, and heavily involved in her Safety Needs. This aspect suggests that Thatcher’s authentic Self was influenced and shaped by powerful 9th house beliefs and philosophies. Pluto is in a partile opposition to Jupiter in Capricorn, and while the orb is too wide for both planets to impact the Sun, it’s easy to ascribe Thatcher’s conservative beliefs to this dynamic, and then notice how those beliefs — and the actions they drove her to take — shaped her identity.

Ascendant in Scorpio

When she interacts with the world and other individuals, she appears to be controlling, intense, ruthless, and powerful (Scorpio). Thatcher’s stern, no-nonsense persona is also the result of Saturn in Scorpio conjunct her Ascendant. It’s ironic that with so much Libra energy involved with her fundamental personality that the “velvet glove” aspects are the ones that come as a surprise. The Saturn in Scorpio “iron fist” is what is the most visible.

Ascendant’s Board of Directors

03 ThatcherAscendant

Mars in Libra in the 11th House [8 Votes]
Mars Rules 1st and 6th Houses

Other people perceive (Ascendant) her need to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is dispassionate, logical, strategic and impartial (Libra), WITH her personality and self-image (Mars rules 1st) and her job and workplace relationships (Mars rules 6th). [Blueprint Sentence]

Thatcher’s drive and ambition are very obvious in her personality, and her Mars in Libra is closely intertwined with her Saturn in Scorpio. Once again we see the willingness to listen to reason and the desire for justice (Libra), coupled with the resolve that once she has made a decision, the course of action is set in stone (Saturn in Scorpio/Fixed). That Mars rules her 1st house and is in her 11th house, with her Sun, further support the idea that Thatcher is always looking after herself, and that the choices she makes and the actions she takes are direct expressions of both her “little s” self and her “Big S” Self.

Venus in Sagittarius in the 1st House [2 Votes]
Venus Rules 7th, 12th, Almuten 4th House

Other people perceive (Ascendant) her need to align with her Core Values and be validated (Venus) in a manner that is truthful, impetuous, frank, and blunt (Sagittarius), WITH her marriage and partnerships (Venus rules 7th), her personal unconscious (Venus rules 12th) and her home and family (Venus almuten 4th). [Blueprint Sentence]

Venus in Sagittarius only has 2 votes on her Ascendant’s Board of Directors; however, Venus in Sagittarius rules Mars in Libra, so it’s more influential than it appears. Thatcher presents herself as someone who always appreciates brutal honesty — even to the point of being blunt. She respects people who are open and direct.

Part of Fortune in Virgo in the 10th House

04 ThatcherPOF

She will experience the greatest amount of prosperity and success (Part of Fortune) by being observant, insightful, shrewd and efficient (Virgo), particularly IN her career, life path, and public image (10th house). [Blueprint Sentence].

It’s also worth noting the service aspect of Virgo energy, considering Thatcher’s career was spent in public (10th house) service (Virgo). She was, of course, also well respected for her political savvy.

Mercury in Libra in the 12th House [10 Votes]
Mercury Rules 8th, 10th, 11th Houses

In order to experience prosperity and success (Part of Fortune) she needs to communicate and process information in a manner that is harmonious, compromising, analytical, and insinuating (Libra), WITH shared resources and other people’s money (rules 8th house), her career and life path (rules 10th house), and her personal ambitions, dreams, and friendships (rules 11th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal unconscious and shadow-self (Mercury in 12th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Mercury in Libra is in charge of Thatcher’s Part of Fortune, which connects it to her Sun because Mercury has 2 votes on the Sun’s Board of Directors. But as noted earlier, Thatcher’s Sun overshadows her Mercury, so again we see the possibility of her personality (Sun) eclipsing her ideas (Mercury).

Summary of Thatcher’s Personality

Even though Thatcher’s Sun in Libra and Ascendant in Scorpio represent very different, conflicting energies, there are so many connections between her Sun and Ascendant — largely due to Saturn in Scorpio being on the Ascendant — that her authentic Self and how she appears to the world are very well integrated.

Part 2: Relationship Needs

Moon in Leo in the 9th House
Moon Rules 9th House

In order to feel Safe (Moon), she needs to feel grand, loving, loyal, and imposing (Leo) WITH her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon rules 9th House). She encounters these needs particularly IN her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon in 9th house). [Blueprint Sentence].

Thatcher’s Moon is in Leo, which suggests that she will feel the most Safe when she is in the spotlight and the center of attention. The Moon in Leo has a Fire Safety Checklist, so she needs to be active and take action to feel Safe. Feeling overlooked or taken for granted will be very threatening to Thatcher, and it may cause her to act out in order to be noticed, if not appreciated.

What’s interesting about Thatcher’s Moon in Leo is that it is so focused and contained within her 9th house ideals, beliefs, higher mind, and philosophies. Because the Moon both rules and occupies the 9th house, all of her Safety Needs are centered on this aspect of her life. It does put her approach to foreign policy (9th house) in an interesting perspective, though. The Moon in Leo in charge of the 9th house expects to be the ruler no matter where it goes. There is an almost willful ignorance of the value or perspective of other cultures, and the unconscious need to make all 9th house experiences conform to her personal and familiar beliefs and ideals. The 9th house emphasis with her Moon also suggests that Thatcher may be extremely attached to her particular beliefs, ideals, and philosophies.

Board of Directors for the Moon

05 ThatcherMoon

Sun in Libra in the 11th House [8 Votes]
Sun almuten 6th House

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), she needs to express her authentic “Big S” Self” (Sun) in a manner that is peaceful, sociable, indifferent, and alert (Libra) WITH her job and workplace relationships (Sun almuten 6th house) She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal aspirations, hopes, and friendships (Sun in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Thatcher’s Sun in Libra has the most influence over her Moon in Leo, with a total of 8 votes on the Moon’s Board of Directors. Being able to express and embody her authentic “Big S” Self is crucial to her ability to feel Safe. But more importantly, the fact that the Sun (“Self”) is in a Cardinal sign (Identity) means that Thatcher will look within herself to feel Safe, and not expect other people to meet these needs for her, at least not on their own. It’s true that the Sun in Libra defines itself through relationship with other individuals, and that the Moon in Leo often looks for the attention and approval of others for Safety. However, Thatcher will tend to be proactive, and will ask (or demand) attention and acknowledgment from others before they have a chance to offer it — particularly in her workplace relationships (6th house).

Mars in Libra in the 11th House [3 Votes]
Mars Rules 1st, 6th Houses

In order to feel Safe (Moon’s Board of Directors), she needs to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is fussy, hesitant, objective, and collaborative (Libra) WITH her personality (Mars rules 1st house) and her job and workplace relationships (Mars rules 6th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal aspirations, hopes, and friendships (Mars in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Mars in Libra’s votes on the Moon’s Board of Directors simply reinforce everything that the Sun in Libra brings to the table, although Mars brings Thatcher’s “little s” self and ego into the mix along with her authentic “Big S” Self. Both Mars and the Sun are in Libra, so they have similar motivations, and they occupy and rule the same houses.

Neptune in the 9th House Conjunct Moon in the 9th House (Rules 9th House)

There is a unity of purpose (Conjunction) that dissolves boundaries and creates issues with glamour and illusion (Neptune) COMING FROM her beliefs, philosophies and higher mind (Neptune in 9th house) and affecting her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon in 9th house). This could cause her to feel unsafe (Moon), particularly with her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon rules 9th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

The conjunction between the Moon and Neptune immediately suggests that Thatcher has difficulties maintaining (or appreciating) appropriate emotional and energetic boundaries. Because of the 9th house influence, this may also affect her ideals and beliefs — and her attachments to those philosophies. Thatcher may be so aware of the highest potential of her ideals that she is unable to accept the practical realities of those ideals. The positive side of this is the ability to inspire others to raise their vibrations to match the higher truth.

Pluto in the 9th House Semi-Square Moon in the 9th House (Rules 9th House)

There is a minor internal tension or friction (Semi-Square) caused by issues with power, control and manipulation (Pluto) COMING FROM her beliefs, philosophies and higher mind (Pluto in 9th house) and affecting her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon in 9th house). This could cause her to feel unsafe (Moon), particularly with her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon rules 9th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

The connection between Pluto and the Moon, combined with the heightened sensitivity of the Moon conjunct Neptune, suggests that Thatcher is particularly invested in her beliefs, and is likely to view any difference of opinion as a direct attack. Because the semi-square is more of a mental aspect than a physical one, it’s likely that this energy helped drive Thatcher to develop her Libra-based diplomatic skills of persuasion.

Chiron in the 6th House Trine Moon in the 9th House (Rules 9th House)

There is an easy, constant, effortless flow of energy (Trine) caused by her core wound (Chiron) COMING FROM her job and workplace environment (Chiron in 6th house) and affecting her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon in 9th house). This could cause her to feel unsafe (Moon), particularly with her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Moon rules 9th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

The trine from Chiron in the 6th house to Thatcher’s Moon in the 9th house also increases Thatcher’s sensitivity and vulnerability around her 9th house beliefs and ideals. It’s important to note, however, that this isn’t a personal aspect per se. The real aspect is Chiron trine Neptune, which is a generational influence. Thatcher’s Moon taps directly into this energy, and it plays out in the relationship between the 6th house working classes and the 9th house lawmakers.

Summary Margaret Thatcher Safety Needs

Thatcher’s ability to feel Safe depends largely on her ability to have absolute faith in her 9th house beliefs and philosophies. She identifies on a deep personal level with these beliefs (because of the Sun and Mars), and with so many outer planet aspects besieging her Moon, she is likely to dig in her heels and defend these beliefs (Moon in Leo/Fixed), strengthening her attachment to them. While Saturn in Scorpio doesn’t have any direct influence over her Moon in Leo, it does have indirect influence over it, because Saturn in Scorpio has the most influence over both the Sun and Mars, the members of the Moon’s Board of Directors.

Venus in Sagittarius in the 1st House
Venus Rules 7th, 12th, Almuten 4th House

In order to feel validated (Venus), she needs to be forthcoming, moralizing, self-assured, and candid (Sagittarius) WITH her marriage and partnerships (rules 7th house), her personal unconscious and shadow-self (rules 12th house), and her home and family (almuten 4th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personality and self-image (Venus in 1st house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Thatcher’s Venus in Sagittarius is also in a Fire Sign, so, as with the Moon, Thatcher needs to take action and be able to express herself to meet her Validation Needs. Because Venus rules the 7th house and is in the 1st house, Thatcher’s Validation Needs are a very big part of her interpersonal relationships, and this could indicate that she needs other people (7th house) to validate (Venus) her personal (1st house) beliefs (Sagittarius). As Venus also rules her 12th house, this need for validation on a personal level may be a source of sorrow and self-sabotage (12th house), and as the 12th house also relates to hidden enemies, could result in attacks not on Thatcher’s ideas and beliefs, but on her 1st house personality.

Venus is also the almuten of Thatcher’s 4th house, which suggests that she also needed her country to provide personal validation of her expression of the truth. This approval may well have been a motivating factor in her political career.

Board of Directors for Venus

06 ThatcherVenus

Jupiter in Capricorn in the 3rd House [7 Votes]
Jupiter Rules 2nd, 4th, 5th, Almuten 9th

She wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors) FOR her ability to grow, expand, and experience faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is ambitious, organized, responsible, and unyielding (Capricorn) WITH her money and resources (Jupiter rules 2nd), home and family (Jupiter rules 4th), her personal creativity, love affairs, and willingness to take risks (Jupiter rules 5th), and her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Jupiter almuten 9th). She encounters these needs particularly IN her writing, communication, and familiar environment (Jupiter in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Jupiter in Capricorn is the very embodiment of the fundamentally conservative values that Thatcher embodied throughout her career. What Jupiter in Capricorn has faith in is the establishment, tradition, and the laws of cause and effect that seem to govern success and expansion in the physical and material world. Because Thatcher encounters Jupiter in Capricorn in her 3rd house, she may have adopted these values in her early education. What’s important, however, is that she specifically applies these values to her money and resources (2nd house), her home, and by extension, her country (4th house), her personal creative expression and approach to gambling and risk (5th house), and her higher education, beliefs, philosophies, and (by extension) foreign policy (almuten 9th house).

Sun in Libra in the 11th House [3 Votes]
Sun Almuten 6th House

She wants to be validated (Venus’ Board of Directors) FOR her ability to express her authentic “Big S” Self (Sun) in a manner that is pacifying, insinuating, fair, and elegant (Libra) WITH her job and workplace relationships (Sun almuten 6th house) She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal aspirations, hopes, and friendships (Sun in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Although the Sun only has 3 votes on Venus’ Board of Directors, it’s significant because the Sun rules Thatcher’s Moon, and this further emphasizes how important it is for Thatcher to be able to stay true to her authentic “Big S” Self in her relationships. Venus, of course, rules her Sun in Libra, and there’s a further connection because of the aspect between the Sun and Venus, which we’ll explore again below, this time in the context of her Validation Needs.

Sun in 11th House (Almuten 6th House) Semi-Square Venus in 1st House (Rules 7th, 12th, Almuten 4th)
[Sun has 3 Votes on Venus’ Board of Directors]

There is a minor internal tension or friction (Semi-Square) BETWEEN her need to express her authentic, “Big S” Self (Sun), specifically involving her job and workplace (Sun almuten 6th house), COMING FROM her personal aspirations and dreams (Sun in 11th house). AND her Core Values and need to be Validated (Venus), specifically involving her marriage and partnerships (Venus rules 7th), her unconscious and patterns of self-sabotage (Venus rules 12th), and her home and family (Venus almuten 4th), COMING FROM her personality (Venus in 1st house). [Blueprint Sentence]

When viewed from the context of her Validation Needs, the semi-square between the Sun and Venus emphasizes how important it is for Thatcher’s authentic “Big S” Self to be a central part of her Validation. It’s not enough for Thatcher to be Validated for her understanding of Truth (Sagittarius); it must be clear that she’s being Validated because the understanding of the Truth is, specifically, hers (Sun). This echoes and supports the observation that with Mercury combust the Sun, and therefore hidden by the light of the Sun, that Thatcher’s role as the messenger can often become more important than the message itself.

Summary of Relationship Needs: Connection between Moon and Venus

Thatcher’s Moon and Venus are both in Fire signs, so she speaks the same language for Safety and for Validation. There is no aspect between the Moon in Venus, although they are applying to a square, it won’t perfect until after the Moon changes signs and moves into Virgo.

What’s most striking about Thatcher’s relationship needs is how much they require her to own and express her individual identity. The Moon and Venus are the only two planets Thatcher has in Fire, and the Sun is heavily involved with both planets. This provides an excellent balance for the Sun, Mars and Mercury in Libra energy that is so strong in Thatcher’s chart. As important as it is for Thatcher to be able to explore her identity in relationship to other individuals, she also has a very strong sense of her self (and her Self), which is a great help in avoiding some of the traps and pitfalls of Libra energy. When Thatcher is in relationship, she still expects balance, but she also expects her partner to facilitate that balance by being as fully present in the relationship as she is.

Part 3: Relationship Wants

Descendant in Taurus / Vertex in Gemini in the 8th House

She is consciously attracted (Descendant) to partners who are generous, tender, resolute, inflexible, and rigid (Taurus).

She is unconsciously attracted (Vertex) to partners who are superficial, ingenious, amusing, and unsettled (Gemini), and she may encounter these partners in her dealings with other people’s money and resources (Vertex in 8th house).

With her Moon in Leo and Venus in Sagittarius, there’s very little chance that Thatcher will be happy with any Descendant in Taurus partners. Taurus and Leo form a fixed square, and Taurus and Sagittarius are quincunx each other, with no common ground whatsoever. On the other hand, the quick, playful, intellectual qualities of Vertex in Gemini partners will do an excellent job meeting her Moon in Leo Safety Needs (Thatcher’s Moon is, in fact, sextile her Vertex), and even though Gemini and Sagittarius are opposing signs, there’s still some common ground there, so these partners could also meet her Venus in Sagittarius Validation Needs.

5th House: Love Affairs
Jupiter in Capricorn in the 3rd House
Jupiter Rules 2nd, 4th, 5th, Almuten 9th

07 Thatcher5thHouse

Margaret Thatcher looks for casual romantic partners (5th house) who align with her need to grow, expand, and experience faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is restrained, materialistic, secure, and conservative (Capricorn), WITH her money and resources (Jupiter rules 2nd), home and family (Jupiter rules 4th), her personal creativity, love affairs, and willingness to take risks (Jupiter rules 5th), and her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Jupiter almuten 9th). She encounters these needs particularly IN her writing, communication, and familiar environment (Jupiter in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

It’s almost contradictory to talk about “casual” romantic partners when Jupiter in Capricorn is in charge. In this context, however, both because of the earthy nature of Capricorn, and the fact that Jupiter in Capricorn is in Fall, and therefore operates on the physical plane, it’s reasonable to speculate that there may be an intense physical and sensual attraction to her 5th house romantic partners. It’s also worth noting that Jupiter in Capricorn also rules the 4th house, and represents Thatcher’s experience of her father. This might suggest that she is attracted to romantic partners who remind her of her father.

7th House: Marriage
Venus in Sagittarius in the 1st House
Venus Rules 7th, 12th, Almuten 4th

08 Thatcher7thHouse

Margaret Thatcher marriage and relationships with other individuals (7th house) involve being able to align with her Core Values and feel Validated (Venus) in a manner that is forthcoming, unrestrained, wise, and headstrong (Sagittarius), WITH her marriage and partnerships (rules 7th house), her personal unconscious and shadow-self (rules 12th house), and her home and family (almuten 4th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personality and self-image (Venus in 1st house). [Blueprint Sentence]

We’ve already explored how important Venus is in the context of Thatcher’s personality and individual identity, and also how essential relationships are to Thatcher. In the context of the 7th house and her marriage partner, Venus in Sagittarius in the 1st house suggests that Thatcher needs a spouse who will validate, support, and define her own individual identity.

11th House: Friendships
Mercury in Libra in the 12th House
Mercury Rules 8th, 10th, 11th

09 Thatcher11thHouse

Margaret Thatcher is likely to become friends (11th house) with people who align with her need to communicate and process information (Mercury) in a manner that is aloof, subordinate, objective, and creative (Libra), WITH shared resources and other people’s money (rules 8th house), her career and life path (rules 10th house), and her personal ambitions, dreams, and friendships (rules 11th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal unconscious and shadow-self (Mercury in 12th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

When we consider the condition of Mercury being combust the Sun in this context, it’s interesting to consider whether Thatcher’s friends truly align with her beliefs and ideas, or if they simply want to be associated with her because of her Sun’s power and influence. Certainly, with Mercury in the 12th house, there is some suggestion that her friends may not be uniformly loyal; some of her friends may, in fact, be hidden enemies.

Connections Between 5th, 7th and 11th Houses

There is a chain of connections between Thatcher’s relationship houses; Jupiter in Capricorn, the ruler of her 5th house, rules Venus in Sagittarius, the ruler of her 7th house; and Venus in Sagittarius in turn rules Mercury in Libra, the ruler of her 11th house. Other than this, however, there are no strong connections between the three houses. This suggests that it may be possible to begin with a casual relationship, progress to a marriage, and then remain friends, but there would not be any other way of moving from one house to another. Once you are in Thatcher’s 11th house “friend zone,” that’s where you will stay.

Marriage Blueprint

10 ThatcherParents

Thatcher’s Father is represented by Jupiter in Capricorn in the 3rd house; her Mother is represented by Mercury in Libra in the 12th house. Neither planet is in particularly good condition; both have dignity by Term, but Jupiter in Capricorn is also in Fall, which suggests physical circumstances that hinder the expression of the planet.

There is a wide square between Jupiter and Mercury, suggesting a past, but lingering tension in her parents’ relationship. The partile opposition between Jupiter and Pluto suggests that she experienced her father in relationship to great power, although given the condition of Jupiter, it’s as likely that her father was the victim of powerful 9th house forces, rather than the master of them.

Part 4: Career

To consider Margaret Thatcher’s career, we’ll look at the 10th house (Career), 6th house (Job) and 2nd house (Money).

10th House: Career
Mercury in Libra in the 12th House
Mercury Rules 8th, 10th, 11th

13 Thatcher10thHouse

Margaret Thatcher’s career and life path (10th house) involve her ability to communicate and process information (Mercury) in a manner that is civil, strategic, detached, and gracious (Libra) WITH shared resources and other people’s money (rules 8th house), her career and life path (rules 10th house), and her personal ambitions, dreams, and friendships (rules 11th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal unconscious and shadow-self (Mercury in 12th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Once more, we have to consider the relative condition of Thatcher’s Mercury, this time in the context of her career and life path — although this is, perhaps, the most significant and prominent way this pattern shows up in her life. Thatcher placed tremendous value on her education and her intellect. Before she entered politics, she was a research chemist, and in her early political career, she was Minister of Education. She had stated that she was most proud not that she was the first female Prime Minister, but that she was the first Prime Minister with a degree in Science.

10th House Ruler (Mercury) Board of Directors

Venus in Sagittarius in the 1st House [5 Votes]
Venus Rules 7th, 12th, Almuten 4th House

Margaret Thatcher’s career and life path (10th house) also involves her need to align with her Core Values and be Validated (Venus) in a manner that is tolerant, idealistic, eccentric, and scholarly (Sagittarius), WITH her marriage and partnerships (rules 7th house), her personal unconscious and shadow-self (rules 12th house), and her home and family (almuten 4th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personality and self-image (Venus in 1st house). [Blueprint Sentence]

It’s no surprise that Thatcher’s values and beliefs should have such influence in the context of her career. As we’ve noted before, the 12th house influence suggests that her Venus in Sagittarius values and the Sagittarian fervor with which she adheres to her beliefs and what she perceives to be true is also one of the instruments of her undoing, as it activates the energy of self-sabotage and hidden enemies. Thatcher had to step down as Prime Minister once it became obvious that her beliefs and ideals no longer aligned with the beliefs and ideals of the country. Even though Venus in Sagittarius is in a Mutable sign, Thatcher was unable to adapt her deeply-held ideals to extend her political career.

Saturn in Scorpio in the 12th House [7 Votes]
Saturn Rules 3rd, Almuten 12th House

Margaret Thatcher’s career and life path (10th house) also involves her need to experience boundaries, limitations, and responsibility (Saturn) in a manner that is forceful, intense, self-reliant, and fearless (Scorpio) WITH her writing, communication, and familiar environment (Rules 3rd) and her personal unconscious and shadow-self (almuten 12th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal unconscious (Saturn in 12th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Once again, we see Thatcher’s Saturn in Scorpio with significant influence, this time in her public persona and career. Thatcher embodied and expressed this particular energy many times during her tenure as Prime Minister, demonstrating her unwillingness to compromise. She was a fearsome authority figure: just ask the Argentine government. When you cross a boundary with Saturn in Scorpio, you pay the price.

6th House: Job
Mars in Libra in the 11th House
Mars Rules 1st, 6th Houses

12 Thatcher6thHouse

Margaret Thatcher’s job (6th house) involves her ability to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is objective, vacuous, clever, and reasoning (Libra) WITH her personality (Mars rules 1st house) and her job and workplace relationships (Mars rules 6th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal aspirations, hopes, and friendships (Mars in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

It’s interesting that Mars in Libra rules Thatcher’s 6th house, because it suggests that she prefers the diplomatic course of action over a more aggressive one. That being said, the various influences in Thatcher’s chart, particularly her Venus in Sagittarius, suggest that while she certainly wants to arrange things so that everyone agrees, it may be somewhat important that everyone specifically agrees with her.

6th House Ruler (Mars in Libra) Board of Directors

The Board of Directors for Mars in Libra is almost identical to the Board of Directors for Mercury in Libra. The only difference is that both Venus in Sagittarius and Saturn in Scorpio have 7 votes each.

2nd House: Money
Jupiter in Capricorn in the 3rd House
Jupiter Rules 2nd, 4th, 5th, Almuten 9th

11 Thather2ndHouse

The way that Margaret Thatcher earns money (2nd house) involves her need to grow, expand, and experience faith (Jupiter) in a manner that is materialistic, robust, enduring, and driven (Capricorn) WITH her money and resources (Jupiter rules 2nd), home and family (Jupiter rules 4th), her personal creativity, love affairs, and willingness to take risks (Jupiter rules 5th), and her beliefs, philosophies, and higher mind (Jupiter almuten 9th). She encounters these needs particularly IN her writing, communication, and familiar environment (Jupiter in 3rd House). [Blueprint Sentence]

Jupiter in Capricorn ruling Thatcher’s 2nd house does suggest that money is quite important, but more than that, it suggests that what matters is creating wealth, and not what wealth can create. Jupiter in Capricorn is in Fall, and operates on the physical plane. Ruling the 2nd house, it suggests that Thatcher has faith that hard work and sacrifice will always pay valuable dividends. Frankly, it’s difficult to imagine someone with Jupiter in Capricorn ruling the 2nd house who doesn’t adhere to conservative principles, at least when it comes to money.

2nd House Ruler (Jupiter in Capricorn) Board of Directors

Saturn in Scorpio in the 12th House [5 Votes]
Saturn Rules 3rd, Almuten 12th House

The way that Margaret Thatcher earns money (2nd house) also involves her need to experience boundaries, structure and responsibility (Saturn) in a manner that is emphatic, ruthless, intuitive, and manipulative (Scorpio) WITH her writing, communication, and familiar environment (rules 3rd House) and her personal unconscious and shadow-self (almuten 12th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal unconscious (Saturn in 12th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Saturn in Scorpio’s influence over the 2nd house suggests an even greater reluctance to spend money, and a stronger attachment to the security that comes from having money safely in the bank, quietly earning interest. The fixed nature of Saturn in Scorpio makes Jupiter in Capricorn even more conservative by nature, and somewhat blunts that initiating and pioneering Cardinal energy that one might expect.

Mars in Libra in the 11th House [5 Votes]
Mars Rules 1st, 6th Houses

The way that Margaret Thatcher earns money (2nd house) also involves her ability to take action and expend energy (Mars) in a manner that is affable, superficial, fussy, and poised (Libra), WITH her personality (Mars rules 1st house) and her job and workplace relationships (Mars rules 6th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personal aspirations, hopes, and friendships (Mars in 11th house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Again, Mars in Libra with 5 votes influencing the 2nd house suggests caution and inaction in financial matters. Mars in Libra, in Detriment, worries about the consequences of any one choice of action. This could create a desire to “have her cake and eat it, too,” with finances. Yes, money has no value unless it’s spent and invested, but once you spend it, you don’t have it anymore. Thatcher will always weigh both sides of any issue very carefully before taking any financial action.

Venus in Sagittarius in the 1st House [3 Votes]
Venus Rules 7th, 12th, Almuten 4th House

The way that Margaret Thatcher earns money (2nd house) also involves her need to align with her Core Values and be Validated (Venus) in a manner that is plainspoken, incautious, tolerant, and excessive (Sagittarius) WITH her marriage and partnerships (rules 7th house), her personal unconscious and shadow-self (rules 12th house), and her home and family (almuten 4th house). She encounters these needs particularly IN her personality and self-image (Venus in 1st house). [Blueprint Sentence]

Although Venus in Sagittarius only has 3 votes on Jupiter’s Board of Directors, it suggests that Thatcher’s beliefs and ideals are a factor in her financial affairs, and if she encounters a cause or opportunity that aligns with her values, Venus’ influence may be what tips the scales in favor of action. In other words, Thatcher will be far more likely to spend money if it aligns with her personal beliefs.

Connections Between Career Houses

The connections between Thatcher’s 2nd, 6th and 10th houses are numerous and strong. Saturn in Scorpio is either the ruler or almuten of the ruler of all three houses (Mercury in Libra, Mars in Libra, Jupiter in Capricorn). Venus in Sagittarius also has influence on all three house rulers’ Boards of Directors. There is a wide square between Jupiter, the ruler of the 2nd, and both Mars (ruler of 6th) and Mercury (ruler of 10th), but this mild tension is more than overshadowed by the common motivations that drive the ruling planets.

Summary

Thatcher’s chart certainly supports the public perception of Margaret Thatcher as “The Iron Lady.” Beneath the polite and generally diplomatic veneer of her Libra Sun, Mars and Mercury, is the steadfast, immovable, and inflexible Saturn in Scorpio. And as all of the Libra energy ultimately filters through her Saturn in Sagittarius in the 1st house, we see how personal and central to her life Thatcher’s beliefs and perception of Truth was. The irony, of course, is that because Venus rules her 12th house, her rigid adherence to her personal beliefs would also be the cause of her undoing in her professional and political life.

That Thatcher had such a powerful influence on the world stage is suggested by the number of outer planet aspects to her personal planets, particularly her Sun and Moon.
